Overhead Thermometer?

Has anyone else noticed that the temperature on the overhead computer seems kinda slow to change? Like when I drive to work in the moring and it is say -10 out. Get it the truck to go to lunch and the real temp is up to 20 or so, well the computer still say -10 and doesn't come up to the real temp for a few minutes. Also when driving down the road and you go through low spots by rivers and such where you know it is colder and the guage never changes for many miles at a time. I know the 2001 was very acurate and constanty changing.

Re:Overhead Thermometer?

If I understand correctly, that thermometer is actually measuring the underhood temperature and not the outside temperature.

Re:Overhead Thermometer?

From the Service Manual

AMBIENT TEMP SENSOR DESCRIPTION
Ambient air temperature is monitored by the over-head console. The ambient temperature messages are received from the Front Control Module (FCM) over the Programmable Communications Interface (PCI) J1850 data bus circuit. The FCM receives a hard wired input from the ambient temperature sensor (Fig. 7). The ambient temperature sensor is a variable resistor mounted to the underside of the hood, in the engine compartment.

OPERATION
The ambient temperature sensor is a variable resistor that operates on a five-volt reference signal sent to it by the Front Control Module. The resis-tance in the sensor changes as temperature changes, changing the temperature sensor signal circuit volt-age to the Front Control Module. Based upon the resistance in the sensor, the Front Control Module senses a specific voltage on the temperature sensor signal circuit, which it is programmed to correspond to a specific temperature. The Front Control Module then sends the proper ambient temperature messages to the EVIC, CMTC over the PCI J1850 data bus. The temperature function is supported by the ambient temperature sensor, a wiring circuit, the Front Control Module, the Programmable Communi-cations Interface (PCI) data bus, and a portion of the Electronics module. If any portion of the ambient temperature sensor circuit fails, the Front Control Module will self-diagnose the circuit.

I think the owners manual says it cannot detect slight and sudden changes in temperature such as in valleys, etc.

Re:Overhead Thermometer?

I'm sure the temperature display algorithm is designed to update slowly so it doesn't jump all over the place but it does seem a little too slow to me too.

Re:Overhead Thermometer?

I re-read the statement in the the manual. page 101 states temp. sensor is located under hood, eng. temp. can influence the displayed temp., therefore, temp readings are updated slowly when the veh. speed is below 20 MPH or during stop and go traffic. :'(
