OK to never empty F/W seperator in 5 yrs?
I've never had a water if fuel alarm.
I've never had to open the valve and drain water out.
I only drain the bowl when I do a filter change every 15K and see no seperation.
I've filled up in many states crossing the country.
Am I lucky or is something not functioning?

Depends on what filter cartridge you use. They are not all water seperators. But it's probably normal. Depending in what part of the country you live, as long as you get fresh fuel from high-volume stations you'll probably never see any water.

Maybe I'm just paranoid but I drain mine about every-other time I fill up. Sometimes every time I fill up in the winter if I remember. When I drain, I just use the pumps over where the big-rigs fill up, it's plenty dirty over there already.
Oh, and I hear the WIF light is pretty unreliable. Wouldn't bet on it to save your life.

Never a hint of water here either, only time mine has ever got drained is when changing filters. At about 80k now and have filled up in at least 8 different states.

I've NEVER opened my valve. I've seen too many people who have and it tears the oring in the valve and it leaks. I DO however CLEAN the filter canister everytime I change the filter.

Had little water in mine when I drained it at 7,500 miles. I only have about 8500 miles on it. It is always garaged and kept full in the winter.
I think it is a good idea to drain it at the half way mark of the life of the fuel filter. I had a Ford that I always fueled at the same place, saw a little water one time and didn't think much of it. Saw water again and switched fuel dealer...no more water.

It's always a good idea to check on a regular basis, but most people will never see any water come out.
OTOH, If you live and buy fuel in a very rural area where the fuel is not flowing all the time and/or the truck regularly sits unused for periods of time, I'd be thinking about installing an additional, better water separator. It would be alot cheaper than buying injectors...
Last winter a friend of mine had his truck refuse to start one day. Come to find he did not even know it had a FW separator. Not only had it never been checked/emptied, but as far as he knew, the filter had never been changed since before he inherited it from from his father 2 years prior, and probably long before that, since it sat in his Dad's garage for about three years before he died. Finally caught up with him. The filter was basically a block of ice inside when we took it off.

43K on my truck, I change my fuel filter at every oil change - 7K intervals. I don't drain it in between oil changes, some people do. I have a neighbor with a 2004.5 that has 150K miles and he has never changed the fuel filter since day one/new.
