Seems to me that you are blaming Michelin for something that isn't their fault. I can't imagine any tire that isn't studded doing great on ice. Any truck I've ever had with an empty bed performed very poorly in winter conditions and yes, cars with better weight distribution over the drive wheels did better.

the michelins suck......never drove on ice but did on wet grass, sand and light mud in parents drive...and got stuck on all three at various times even in 4wd. Too skinny and tread too tight to give any good traction for a vehicle that heavy. I had them on my cherokee 12 years ago stock and they did pretty good on a light vehicle but on the front of a heavy CTD they are ill chosen. Now on highway...they were awesome in rain and dry pavement and wore like steel.
Much happier with the larger footprint of the Nitto Terra Grapplers in 295.....like night and day.

Looking at the Michelin site the primary design attribute of the OEM A/S tires appears to be low noise. One would think that on a 4x4 truck at least the M&S would be offered, but who knows what they were thinking. The OEM BFG seems to get even worse reviews than the Michelins at places like TireRack.
I got around ok in snow on the OEM Michelins, but on ice they were worthless. Flatlanders seem to get better perfromance, as people from the midwest always poke fun at us for liking snow tires, studs, and such, at least until their first ice storm.
