After having balljoints replaced with XRF at local dealer -After a week or so, I noticed that one of the rubber boots was torn on lower BJ I returned to the dealer. He said "no prob, we'll replace the boot" -an OEM boot won't fit on the XRF. Oh duh!
I suggested just replace the XRF back to stock OEM, but to my surprise and theirs, the stock will not fit properly now because the splines on the external part of the XRF have made the housing where the BJ mounts too large.
Lesson learned! Once you replace OEM BJ's with XRF, you can't go back!
Was anybody else aware of this?
And as seems to be typical for me, I needed the truck back today for a trip to Montana tomorrow...had to have new XRF's overnited to dealer. So it looks like I'll be lucky to leave Monday.

I had a few customers run into this problem when they tried to replace their XRF's with Dynatrac's. They originally thought the the Dynatracs had too small of a taper so I told them to see if OEM's would fit and they ran into the same issue. I heard of a few guys turning the XRP tapers down a little in a lather to get them to fit.

I talked with mark at XRF chassis and was told the lower b/j were over sized 3 to 5 thousands so that any out of roundness (or wear) is corrected when the b/j are installed. He said you might have to cool b/j down for easier installation. Would have been nice to know a head of time.

Was thinking about XRFs. Would leaving them in a freezer overnight be enough? Or do I need to bring home a small dewar of LN2 from work?

Well, I left them in the freezer for three days.
When I received them I wasn't ready to put them on the truck yet.

The freezer also works great for U-joint caps. It helps the grease firm up and hold the bearings in and also makes installing them in the yokes by hand possible.
