new truck questions
hey guys i am a 2nd gener right now but am going to trade or sell mine soon. I want a 03 or newer 2500 4x4 short bed quad cab i have found a new 07 5.9 HO in wilmington for 34,ooo it is the metallic grey with the slt package. i would like to know what kind of problems you guys are having with the 3rd gen trucks and what years to stay away from as well as what stuff to be wary of. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think there are any problems with the third gen 07 5.9 that I know of. Just DO NOT let the dealer do the reverse horn safety recall if it hasn't already been done.
Sounds like a fair enough price, I bet you can get them closer to 30K though.

Sounds like a great price to me. I also have not heard of any problems with the 07's any more than any other of the third generations. Lift pump is in tank unit, injectors seem to be a little better than earlier ones. As far as the backup alarm, learn to live with it, it's there and no easy way to disable it other than using the seat belt option. I, so far, have found my 07 to be a much better truck than my 04.5 was. Still only at 5000 miles though so time will tell......

Not sure if the 07's are the same but the A/C clutch seems to make some noise in the 06 trucks when enguaged after its not been used for a day or so but seems to be normal by most reports. (noise only when first enguaged)

This is standard in the 06 and up trucks from the factory.

What's the reverse horn thing? Mine doesn't do anything weird.

The reverse horn thing was an update that came out in 05 to allert the driver that the engine was running, trans in reverse, driver seat belt not connected, and driver door open, and foot off the brake this causes the horn to honk and light to flash.
The update was due to problems with the trans not being in park or slipping out of park into reverse, later 05 trucks came with this update installed and is standard on the 06 and probrably the 07 (auto trans only)

Looks like a great deal, go for it. I just picked mine up last month and was thrilled to find an 07 5.9 still on the lot. I too hate the horn alarm, will try to get it disabled one day soon. Only problem I ever had with the common rail trucks was frying the tranny in my 05 at 37K miles. To be fair though, I was running 900 ft lbs through a stock tranny . Can't expect it to hold through that!

thanks for all the input guys. i will prolly be traveling alot in the near future as the wife wants to be a traveling RN and will prolly get a 26 to 28 ft. 5er camper. wandering what kind of chips they have for these new trucks i doont want a whole lot cause i dont want to have to upgrade tranny or fuel sys. i have already gone thru the fp nightmare with my 00 and that is the main reason for the move up

I'd jump all over 34K for a 5.9 '07 if that includes tax, title, & tags. That's about what mine ended up costing and I bet your dealer would do it too. As far as mild performance upgrades I've had the quad xzt tow chip (+65hp/165tq) on mine for about a month now and I like it a lot. Only upgrading you might need with it is an egt gauge. All the rest fueling, tranny, or clutch will be just fine in stock form. Do a search on xzt lots of comments here on them..
