Alright guys my Dad just bought himself a 05 2500 QC short bed 4x4. My question is how long should he run it before he can change over to synthetic oil in the motor? Factory book says that only 500 miles are needed to "break in" the motor, that sounds awful quick to me, I was thinking around 5k or so. What's up with the 15k oil change interval too, do you think it's safe to let it go that long?

the cummins motor is ready to roar right out the box, no real need to break it in. what is mostly needed for that 500 miles break in is the rear end to seat.

500 miles is just right. A coworker bought an 05 not long ago and he had the oil analyzed at about the 500 mile mark and it came back with high silicate content. It comes from the way the cylinder block is manufactured, that is they're cast in sand molds.

Yep the 500 miles is for the drive train not the engine. However Cummins says to wait for around 15-20k for engine full break-in . If you go ahead and tow heavy after the 1k mile reccomendation it will break-in sooner.
