My truck scared me!

Im out and about in my truck yesterday and when I would put it in park it would start high idling. I didnt pay much attention to it since everything else was fine. Well later in the day I pull out into the freeway and it starts runnin rough, and my check gauges light came on,my temp. shot into the red all at the same time. So I pull over and its idling rough but my temp starts comin down a lil bit but i would start movin and would try to go towards red again. So I turned around and limped home in it. I hadnt changed my fuel filter so I did that and I checked the coolant level and it was low so put some more in. She seems to be runnin fine now. Anything else I should do? This is my first diesel so im still learnin.

How much coolant did you add? I haven't put a drop in yet in an 05'. Definately sounds like something is going on is that an 07 or 07.5......do you have a 5.9 or 6.7?

I have the 5.9. I had to add about 1/2 to 3/4 of an antifreeze jug. Also, why is the coolant orange lookin? I had always seen just the green kind.

Do not mix orange and green. Can make a jello like mess through the whole system. Most coolant been orange for a number of years now.If truck starts to run hot it kicks the fan on and goes into high idle(1000 rpm)to try to cool engine down.Probably truck has had a slow cooling system leak.Right side of engine heater hoses are prone to drip/seep.Lots of posts on those.

Correct! Mine lost a lot of fluid through the hose leading the reservior and caused mine to overheat. Baught a 25 cent hose clamp and saved a 10,000 dollar engine. Never leaked again

Sounds like thats exactly what it was doing. It would go to 1000 rpm.

I had the same problem with my truck at like 8K miles.. I took it in once and they said they couldnt find a problem.. truck was fine for like 2 weeks then did it again.. I took it back and said this is bull.. it only has 9K miles on it.. turns out the waterpump was cracked and leaking when at operating temp and pressurized. I would have the dealer look at your waterpump..
