Muffler? I don't need no stinking muffler!
I took the muffler off today. Like everyone says, the muffler is a bear to get off. I used a dremel and three cuttoff wheels to slit the sides of the muffler pipe, then pealed them up / down and got the dang anchor to fall on my hand and nearly smash it flat. Note: Watch out for falling muffler!! The hangers are a pain for sure, and are your biggest ememy. I had to push pull curse and fight with it before I figured out the rear most hangar was the one causing all the trouble. Once I adjust that one, it came off ok. Putting the new pipe on took some more hangar manipulation, but it was a lot easier than the anchor removal. Once I got it all clamped down and the hangar on, I took it for a spin. I like the sound a lot. It sounds like a Freightliner when you want it too, but just adds a low rumble under normal driving. It did have a NASTY drone at first, everywhere. I loosened the hangar and moved it to a more comfortable looser position then clamped it down TIGHT. I also torqued the band clamps down TIGHT with an impact. The drone is now gone, and the sound is incredible. My buddy just bought a stainless 5 inch complete, so when he gets that on I'm curious who's will sound better.
Highly recommend it (Genos eliminator kit, with 4 inch stepped band clamps from the local International shop).

It only comes withe the pipe and the hangar. I think it says to reuse the factory clamps, but mine were rusted so badly I had to use an impact to get the nuts off the threads, or I would have been fighting with a rachet for 10 minutes. The impact worked hard all the way to the end of the threads. I got two band clamps from the local big truck shop that cost me $25 for the pair.

I left my cat on, so it's really not very loud unless you give it some go pedal.

Sound w/o cat
Does the cat cut any noise? I removed the cat as well as the muffler, trew away the muffler but still own the cat. Turns out I could settle for a bit less sound, and I am wondering what happens if I just put in the cat again. Is it worth the effort?

I'd like to get rid of the muffler, too, but am scared of the drone, especially on long road trips w/ the TT behind me. Does it drone when pulling a trailer? I also wonder if it would be any louder than it is now w/ the Donaldson 40"?

I haven't towed with it yet, so I'm not sure about the drone while towing issue. I will tell you that it is not noticable at 65 - 70 mph on the highway. You really can't hear it at all, it sounds like it did with the muffler at those speeds. I have read many times that the cat quiets it down significantly, that's why I left mine on.

That was the first thing I did to my truck the week I got it. I had a straight pipe put in and I left the cat but I had horrible drone. I havnt heard any straight pipes yet with no drone. I still have my cat with my 5" Bully Dog Exhaust and its pretty loud still. With out the cat was unbearable. The cat deffinetly quiets down the straight pipes.

No I had a horrible drone with the straight pipe and my cat still in. I drove 1700 miles in day and a half and grew to hate the straight pipe at 80-85. With the bully dog exhaust I had alot of drone with not cat. But that lasted about two days and it went right back in the shop and I had the cat put into the 5" System. The cat does help with the drone though atleast IMO.
