MPG-Overhead readout vs actual

I just brought this 2005 truck and heard good things on the mpg front for the CP03 vs my old VP-44. So on a nice 400 mile trip I'm grinning from ear to ear on the mileage output of the overhead council which reached as high as 27 mpg and averaged out at 26.4 running 65 mph avg. But to my dismay, 160 mile portion took 10 gallons of fuel so something's not right.

Is there a way to recalibrate the overhead council into some real numbers? I would hate to forget about it and see my DTE is a hundred miles off and run out of fuel.
Thanks
Pat

A programmer usually gives them false readings but they are not correct stock. Hand calc is the only way. 16mpg seems about right

Your DTE is usually accurate but the MPG is usually out to lunch. Expect around 700km (430miles) for an empty truck.

Always thought that was weird, the DTE is very accurate even when I had my Quad on it.

I'm glad to see that others have found the DTE being accurate while the MPG is not. I thought I was imagining things.

Same thing here on both my '06 and my '08. The DTE is almost spot on .... the MPG is so far off it would need a tug boat to bring it back to being accurate.

my overhead is about 2mpg higher than my hand calculated mileage. I average about 17.5, whereas my overhead says 19.5.. I too was grinning ear to ear and bragging to all my friends I could run 26-28mpg on the freeway... reality is, I'm not far off, and still doing pretty good for a 6000lb truck.

You can always just look at your gas gauge. When it is pointing towards the E more than the F....stop and get some fuel. That's what I do and it's worked for me very well.

Mine use to be 1 mpg high or low of hand calculated that is until the dealer hooked up the start scan to find a trans problem, now it reads 4-7 mpg high.

Mine reads anywhere from 2-6 mpg off. Depending on what tune I've got the Smarty or Quad on. Isn't accurate stock either.

The only thing that overhead MPG guage does is make you feel good. Hand calculated consistently yields results 3-5 mpg lower than the lie-o-meter, at least on my truck. Sure is nice to look overhead and see that I'm averaging 19.4 mpg, but then again I haven't reset it for 50000 miles and my hand calculated average is 16.2 mpg.

Distance to empty seems to be a bit more accurate, but I'm really not tempted to put that to the test by seeing what it reads when I run out of fuel! If it's showing anywhere under 50 miles DTE I'm stopping at the next place that has diesel.
