MPG data from my 4k mile trip

VA to NM (no more than 65mph, 60.8 avg mph on engine)

# gal used | # miles trav. | MPG
---------- -------------- ----
23.7 | 463 | 19.5
25.8 | 495 | 19.2
25.4 | 513 | 20.2
26.2 | 506 | 19.3

totals
------ ------------- ----
101.1 | 1977 | 19.5 avg.

NOTES:

moderate headwind ~ 1/4 of trip
PS winter blend every tank

------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------

NM to VA (75-80mph, 72.4 mph avg on engine)

# gal used | # miles trav. | MPG
---------- -------------- ----
26.3 | 458 | 17.4
20.3 | 343 | 16.9
25.5 | 410 | 16
25.3 | 425 | 16.8
17.5 | 319 | 18.2

totals
------ ------------- ----
114.9 | 1955 | 17 avg.

NOTES:

last 120 miles 65 mph
PS winter blend in 3 tanks
Stanadyne in 1 tank
nothing in 1 tank

So, in conclusion I took 3 days driving, 2 nights motel (32hrs 38min on engine) to get to NM, 2 days driving, 1 night in a motel (27hrs on engine) to get back. I used 13.8 gallons more of fuel on the way home at about 3.25/gal, so $44.85 or about the price of a motel room. Since I decided to drive a couple hours more each day it really didn't matter except that I get today off to recover, sweet. Just thought somebody might be interested in this hand calculated no BS data.

yep, nice job and pretty respectable mileage considering your speeds and the size of our trucks.
$4.16 for that same gal of diesel here right now.

Your data shows how once you go past the 65 MPH range your fuel mileage drops. Awesome job on this..

with 3.73 gears and stock rubber your looking at 2k rpm at 65mph. now what would be interesting would be testing that with a set of 35's cause it raises the speed to 75mph at 2k rpm and comparing the results.

yep, truck is all stock except whats in my signature which don't affect anything at all. I'm curious if it would do better with 33's since that will probably be my next set of tires. really, I'm just happy to get my overall avg speed up a little so if I ever take it in for engine work they don't deny it cause it idles to much. I seem to run just over 1800 RPM to run 65mph (verified by GPS, speedometer is a couple MPH low), that seems to be my happy place.
