Michelin LTX 245/70/17
I can get a pretty good deal on 4 Michelin LTX 245/70/17. I have Michelin LTX 265/70/17 now and they are getting old (58,000 miles). Is there a big difference between 265's and 245's, handling, control, weight load????? They are "E" rated. Help anyone.

I had 245's on my truck when I originally went to look at it. The salesman told me they were brand new tires, I told him if he wanted the sale to take them off and put them on a vehicle they belong on and put minimum 265's on the truck. They do look rather goofy is what i'm getting at, like donuts on a truck.

20mm wider to be exact. The 245's came stock on all ST 2500 and 3500 03-07 Rams CTD or Hemi mounted on grey steel wheels with the rectangular vents and grey hub caps. The SLT's got the chome dipped steel while the Laramies got chrome plastic dipped covers over alloy. The Big Horns, and like packages, got the polished alloy which in my opinion are the nicest wheels stock. The SLT's and all other models came with 265 LTX AS or BFG Rugged Trails.

They are not only going to be skinnier, but shorter. Your aspect ratio how tall the tire is also comes into play here-the 265/70s have a sidewall that is 70% of the width or .7x265mm=185.5mm (the measurement of the tire between the outside of the rim to the tread.) The 245/70s will have a sidewall of .7x245mm=171.5mm. If you want to figure the total height of the tire, take the total aspect ratiox2, divide that by 25.4, and add the rim diameter. So the 265s will be (185.5x2)/25.4+17"=31.6 inch tall tire. The 245s will be (171.5x2)/25.4+17=30.5 inches tall, or more than an inch shorter. Hope I didn't confuse the situation too much, and hope it helps.

OK, BgBlkTrk & staarma, Thank You, That's the kind of information I was looking for.
They are not only going to be skinnier, but shorter.
Looks like 245's are out of the question for me. Thanks again for the help.

With the 4:10's in your sig, you're rpms are going to climb, too and it will change your speedo rating. I went from 265 to 285's and my speedo now reads 2 mph higher and my highway rpms dropped ~ 150 rpms.
Notice the loud hondas driving around by young guys that are lowered and have big tires with no sidewalls, usually on chrome rims? Those are ricers.
Don't forget about Sears when shopping for tires. They beat my favorite place by far when I did the Michelin recall thing.
