Lots of fuel pump questions – 04.5 intank conversion, Airdog 100 & 2006 in-tank pump

This is going to be quite lengthly, bear with me.

I have a 04.5 Dodge Ram truck that originally had a filter mounted fuel pump. Years ago I bought a Air Dog 100 for it, however before I had a chance to install it, the lift pump failed when I was away from town, and I had to get the in-tank pump installed under warranty at the dealer.

I ended up rolling that truck in a freak 5mph roll over. I bought it back from the insurance company with the intention of rebuilding it, but a bunch of other stuff happened that prevented that from happening. In the meantime the truck has become a farm / hunting truck. For less then half of the price of a new quad I have a 500hp toy with heat, a/c, a great stereo, and room for 5 of my friends!

I bought a 2006 to replace the 04.5, and intended on putting the Airdog system on it. However the 2006 hasn’t been the pinnacle of reliability and it seems I’m always working on some other problem instead of getting around to installing the Air Dog.

The lift pump on the 04.5 has failed again (that makes 3 total, two filter mounted and one in-tank)

At first I thought this would motivate me to finally get around to installing the Air Dog on my 2006, then I could take the intake pump and install it on the 04.5. This would require no extra money as I already have all the parts.

Truth be told I’m intimidated buy the Air Dog installation and the potential ¼ fuel starvation issues. I have read over countless threads on this topic, and it will appear that I’m in a for a weekend long project, and may end up having reduced driving range, which is unacceptable.

This brings me to my first question. What is the definitive answer on the best way of installing the Air Dog, with no fuel starvation issues?

Second question: If I do install the Airdog on the 06, will I be able to take the fuel pump from it and install it on the 04.5? What are the differences in the two units? Rock Auto has two separate separate units listed, and the one for the 04.5 retofit is $100 more expensive. AIRTEX Part # E7181M for the 06 for $143 and the 04.5 retrofit pump is AIRTEX Part # E7187M for $254.59.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Carl

The air dog install is not that bad at all, i just installed it on my 06 a few months ago. make sure you read the directions carefully on the the removal of the lift pump, i have heard a lot of guys drilling holes in the bottom of the canister and i think this is what causes the 1/4 tank problem. the directions tell you NOT to drill holes in it cause there is a one way valve at the bottom that allows fuel in the canister, so if you drill holes in it the fuel will obviously drain out.

good luck!!

I beleive the tank design changed a little in 05 with the install of the in-tank pump. I beleive this becuase when 05+ guys want to add a pump-less canister they have to use a Liberty canister, not a 03-04 canister.
