Looking for advise on stock tire replacements

I have 60K on the original BFG Rugged trail tires.

They are LT265/70R17 E.

I can not find many options for this size in an E rating.

I run mostly highway and only tow up to 5000 lbs. in the summer (21' boat). Since I live in the Northeast I need tire that goes very good in the snow. I do not take the truck off road.

I am looking advise on E rated tires available in this size and if I should consider going to a C or D rated tire.

Thanks for any help.

You could drop down to a "D" rated tire as long as it has the higher rate ratings for example the BFG A/T's in size 285/70/17 is a "D" rated tire but it carries a load rating of 3,195 lbs per tire @ 65 psi. Seems like a lot of folks are running either the BFG's, Nittos, Toyo or Michelin. Check out their web sites and see what's available. I would not recommend a "C" rated tire for these trucks These trucks just weigh too much for a "C" rated tire IMO

I replaced my Rugged Trails with BFG 285\70\17 ko TA's. I got them from Discount Tire and couldn't be happier so far. I even got a 200 dollar trade in on my 30,000 mile stock tires.

IMHO, the 285's make a great replacement tire for our trucks. They have a more aggressive tread for mud and snow. And although "D" rated, the 3195lb rating is the same as the "E" rated Rugged Trails.

The Stock 265's are just to small and don't look right on our trucks. And, in my opinion...the 315's that a lot of guys use are just to big. They rob power and mileage. The 285's are a good compromise in looks and performance. My first pic in my gallery shows the new tires.

After getting your new tires you should consider going to the dealer to get your pinion factor reset for the new tire size to keep your mileage and speedometer accurate. In my case it was changed to 630 revs per mile.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Rick. I am considering buying a black "Sport" Grill for it and a rear Ranch Hand bumper. That would eliminate any chrome from the body of the truck. I have also considered having my forged wheels powdercoated black, except for the chrome center. I just need time and more money...but the truck will always be a work in progress I suppose.

I went with Pro comp Xtreme A/T's, 305/65/17. They are load range E and look great, but they may be a bit too aggressive if you driva all highway, great in the snow though. The All Terrain TA's are a great tire, D load range would be fine for what your doing with it I just wish they had a 305 or 295 to choose from.

TexasCTD...

Are the TA's as quite on the highway as the Rugged trails?

How are they wearing?

Is the ride any better, worse or the same as the OE tires?

Thanks everyone for you help.

FYI... the local BFG dealer told me not to get the TA's. He said the people he sold them to where not happy with them and that they do not wear well.

Lightbulb DavidNY03

I have the 285/70/17 BFG All Terrains on my truck mounted on 17x9 Eagle Alloy wheels and I think the ride feels softer and the truck now handles better compared to stock. The stock Rugged Trails that were on my truck absolutely sucked on wet pavement and in snow. The rear end would slide very easily with the Rugged Trails. I have experienced positive results so far with the All Terrains both on wet pavement and in snowy conditions. Can't really comment on the wearing issue because I have only had them on my truck for about 4,000 miles but so far they still look like their brand new. As far as quiet, I can't hear them at all on the pavement while cruising down the highway. One word of caution though, the All Terrains have a real bad habit of picking up small loose stones and throwing them up in the fender wells or back against the rocker panels. Since I have been running the A/T's, I have noticed several rock chips in my paint down along the rocker panels.

I know what you mean about the Rugged Trails on wet pavement. I have the limited slip, but they are still very easy to spin. In the snow the truck has to be in 4wd, but once in 4wd drive I have no problems in the snow.
I use a cell phone a lot on the highway and I was concered with the TA's being louder. Doesn't seem like a problem (no pun intended).

icrider..Yes, TA are the same as All Terrian's

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfgap...erraintako.jsp

The BFG site lists the 285/70R17 All Terrian TA's as Original Equipment for DC. I am assuming these are OE for the Power Wagon?

Cooper Discover ATR, I have had them on for about 4000 miles and they seem to do well in the snow and the ride is ok.
