I am pretty sure all the big 3 has the same thickness. These trucks arent made like my 79 chevy was, where i could have a hoe-down on my hood with 30 people and it hold everyone without even bending.

I hate our paint and clearcaot. everytime i wash my truck there are more scratches. most buff out, but if a pine needle blows past my truck i get a stratch.

Good experiment, but I also agree that the make-up of the metal and how it is formed also play a factor in this.

Just my .02.
I agree totally. I don't think it is actually thinner - I just thinks its a result of the design.

I dented my tailgate just by pushing it closed one day.

would anyone like some cheese with their whine, most of u guys should be driving/polishing civics.....you have a diesel TRUCK!!! if you did more workin and less washin you would have less dents and scratches plus no one would notice the ones that u do have!!!! hahahaha
Also I assume that HOV is correct about most manufactures using the same gauge sheetmetal...and yes it is thin...less weight = better mpgs....but obviously no one really cares enough (encluding me) to bust out the micrometer and check...probably to buisy cleaning or complaining...wait..i thought that was the old lady's job....!!!!

It might not make a big difference but you also have to take into account for the layers of primer, paint and clear coat.... also depends on how accurate your gauge is. just a thought.............

i too have dented my taailgate just by pushing on it too hard.

Ive owned 13 fords and 3 chevrolets. the only one with sheet metal this brittle was the 2005 f-150. All the others including an 02 and f-250, 06 f-250, 03 f-350, 98 ranger and 97 f-350 never woudl dent unless something hit it or i hit it with something. never with my hands!

Well, If our sheet meatl is so flimsy,....

I just had a dent remover guy chase me back to my pad exclaiming that he could get a dent in my lower passenger door out. The dent was caused by falling rock from the mountains. He tried for a good 20 minutes, but the metal wouldn't budge. He gave up and drove off without collecting a cent.

That I do agree with. Seems to chip as easy or easier than it dents.

And yes its a truck and not a BMW, but all my older trucks were 4x4s and used off road as much as on. They did not have any more dings and paint chips than this one has and its never gonna see the places those trucks went.

Measurements would have to be taken on bare sheet metal, paint thickness alone can vary .005"-.010" or more.

At least we can get an idea within 1/100th of an inch then. Since both vehicles would be painted, the error would be reduced to the difference in thickness between paint.

I had a '04 1500 Ram and I believe the metal on that was thinner than my '06 3500. I dented it with my elbow before....and when I tried to get that dent out with a Pops-A-Dent, I ended up putting a second dent in it. I felt like Curly from the Three Stooges!!! BOO-BOO-BOO-BOOH!!!!
