I never, never have seen anything close to 20mpg in my truck and it now has around 20k on it. I average around 14mpg at best. I'm calling shananigans.

These trucks are capable of good mileage if driven correctly. I love it when people question the mileage numbers and say "well your odometer is not accurate" or "you acutally put more fuel in the truck than what the pump said". No one ever seems the question the calibration of a dyno or someones "guestimate" of what they haul with there trucks. Those claimes seem to blessed without much question. But the minute someone claims 20 mpg or better its "dude, your high or something". Face it, these trucks are capable of being insanely juiced, pulling huge loads and, if you drive it right, getting great mileage for a large vehicle.

Scangauge II for real time MPG readings. Eggshells under your foot net good #'s (while I havent seen 20MPG's I have seen close to 18 on winter fuel and it wasn't all highway by any means)...I have found that cruise control over a set distance is actually more effecient than my right foot w/ an eggshell underneath.

Just got back from a 1440 mile round trip between California and Washington. Truck averaged 19 miles per gallon @ 70-75 mph.Now has 19,100 on the odometer. Had some snow driving and some up and downs on small country roads or she might of hit 20 for an average.

Averaging 14 in the winter, full toolboxes & ladder racks, mostly on local highways. Only 6K on it. maybe it will get better once broken in.

I'm skeptical as well, I've kept track at every fill up, best I've EVER got is 17.6 per US gallon and that was driving like an old man. I average 15-16 MPG.
Got over 20 a few times, but that was per CDN gallon.

OK, here's mine. 07 5.9 auto 3.73 4x4 2500 short box. Went from tampa Fl to Jackson Mi during Christmas 1200+ miles. Got 21.1 going to Mi and got 21.4 avg going back to Florida. Flying J and BP fuel mostly. Ran 75-80 MPH or whatever traffic was doing, didn't lead the pack but stayed near the front. Sure it was mostly winter fuel and truck was at 12000 miles when we started.

Me neither. I've got freespin hubs, auxillary overdrive, and 15K on the odo. The best I've ever gotten was 18.79 not really driving for economy but not redlight racing at every stop either really. I just don't get it. All these stock 4x4 trucks getting 20+ mpg?? There is no way those guys, especially with the g56 manuals, can be driving faster than 63mph.

Some of us are 4x2's with G56. The ones I see complaining the most, if you read their signature, have some sort of box on it or oversized tires. The mileages I quote are mostly city/local hwy driving mixed with some rush hour traffic. I'm going from stop/go to 35-45 mph type stuff with no more than 20-25 minutes of 60-70. Anticipating stop lights or traffic slow downs goes along way for better mileage also. If I see a light up ahead go red, the truck goes in neutral and I coast. Suprisingly these things dont lose much momentum when coasting. When stuck in stop/go, I use first or second and lay way back and just let the truck idle in gear. I'd seen big rig drivers do this. Sure beats clutch-in/clutch-out for several miles. I also noticed from our evacuation during hurricane Rita that diesels do not use much fuel when idling. We went 230 miles in 18 hours and the truck use just a smidge less than 1/2 tank. Any chance I get now, the truck goes into idle while maintaining forward momentum if I see any kind of slow down up ahead. Its second nature now. A habit. Pure hwy with my older G56 my mileage is not near as good as the automatic or newer G56's. Still in the high 18's and low 19's, but not the 20-22 I can get on my daily commute. I drove Houston to Odessa plus 4 days in Odessa (~100 miles) twice in three weeks. Same result...18.7-19.2 mpg. Thats with the cruise on 73 (2250 rpm). It is what it is.

I've never seen that much with either of my trucks. both 4x4 and both geared between 3:73 and 4:10. The 4:10 truck had 35's on it and it was lifted. the 3:73 is geared a little lower due to smaller tires - 265/70/17's. I drive on the express way here in vegas about 70% of the time. My lifted truck averaged 15.5 and the 3:73 truck (which is also a dually) averages 15.2. I drive extremely consistantly at about 68 on both.

I've never seen anything over 17 over the last 5 years.

Go figure. I know that the Dually will suck more fuel, and I know that the 35's sucked more fuel.... just wish they both would suck LESS!
