I hate junkyards!!!
i was having a issue with my driverside window switches, so I called the dealer and they wanted $69 for a new. so i was thinking of do a mod to the switches, figured i would try it out on one from the junkyard to see what happened. well i went to get one and they wanted $75 for a used one out of a totaled truck. best part was they it broken (tabs that hold it in place were broke off). I told the dude your crazy , I can get a brand new one from the dealer cheaper than that.
around here they charge just as much for POS used part as they dealer does for new one!

Advocate of getting the ban button used on him...
I have not been to a junk yard here for several years for the same reason I have done the same thing. Call the dealer to get a price and then check junk yard and the price is higher!! I don't know how they can stay in business.

the GOOD junkyards have "all you can carry" days:
$25 for all you can carry in your hands,
$100 for all you and a buddy can carry on an old hood.
and boy, those places are PACKED every day they have that special.
i rebuilt a State Patrol mustang that way, needed a TON of small parts.
most of them just name a price, and expect you to haggle them down, or pay that price like a dummy.
FWIW, you can get some good deals.
i had a $400 peice break on my SAAB, mechanic says, VW uses this these too, tell the junkyard it's something for emissions, they won't care.
2 hours and $10 later, got me a new IAC motor! sweet!

kind of crazy what they think they can charge.....I dont know how they stay in business either. but some people are stupid and dont do there homework about what they need and end up paying more for a used part.

First, you disrespected them by calling them a "junk yard". Its "Salvage Yard" (I had a yard owner tell me that once)
I got a small load of parts for my wifes Intrepid a couple of months ago. Had been years since I had been to a yard. Guy quoted me prices over the phone. I get there, he tells me to look for the mirror on another car and his guys will remove it. I look for an hour or so and finally locate a good one. I tell him where the mirror is and he pulls one from off the shelf behind him. Then says its $75. I said $55 like you quoted me. He relented after a bit. I also need a new drivers side door handle for the same car. They said I would have to buy the whole door panel for $100 because the handle could not be removed. I showed him and his helpers how to remove it without destroying it. They protested for a bit but finally let me have the just the handle.

I forgot to mention the 04 or 05 CTD Ram they had in the yard. Actually they had a couple. The engine was gone in one. The other one still looked good, well aside from the crushed cab. I asked how much for the engine in that one. He said $4K. I assume that's not a bad price??

A lot of our junk yards around here won't let you go look by yourself anymore-probably something to do with liability issues or something. I just fixed my sister-in-law's minivan by getting an idler pulley off of ebay, cost me all of $15, and the dealer wanted to charge her $350, local salvage yards wanted me to bring in the part to match it up.

Got to haggle and know what to get. The "common" parts are high dollar like starters etc.. Might as well go buy that rebuilt at a parts store. It's because it's in their computer.
1)Ask if they have the vehicle you need your parts off of
2)Find it and make sure it has the part
3)Go in and offer them what you will pay on that part
4)get them to take it off or leave
The smaller less corporate yards are the ones you'll find deals at.
I have a business degree from a top 20 business school and a good office job but I still enjoy throwing on overalls and rummaging the junk yards for fox body parts or older 73-87 chevy truck parts.

We have a couple of Junk yards here called Crazy Ray's and you pay $1.00 to get in and have a price list like a menu. No matter if it is for a Caddy or Ugo if a door is priced $40 that's what you pay. You have to take in your own tools and get the parts yourself. I usally take my wheelbarrow to carry the tool box and parts. I built my Jeep Dana 44 from one. Great place i love to just walk around and browse.
