I found the culprit!!!

I've had my truck for about ten months now, and I finally found my biggest problem. There is a very consistent rattle that drives me nuts coming from the dash. Or so I thought. It's hard to pinpoint the location of the rattle while driving, and thats about the only time I can hear it, or when someone with a bumpin stereo system is close to me at a stop light.

But when I got to work on Saturday, there were a couple of locomotives spotted pretty close to where I park my truck and I could hear the rattle as I was getting out of the truck. So, later on when I didn't have anything to do, I set out to find it. I was pretty much laying on the top of the dash trying to figure out where the noise was as when I noticed that the noise was coming from behind me. I got to looking and found the rattle is inside of the overhead console. So now, I just need to take the headliner down to remove the console and fix it.

I even took it to a dealership and they tried to tell the rattle was caused by the wiring harness for my dvd player.

Sorry for the long post. I'm just really excited to finally find it.

Glad you found it....I have heard a wind noise coming from my dash area. Figured out a few days ago that the windshield is not sealed well...I could feel hot air coming in!

After 10 months and 10k, I'm finding, besides the motor, my Dodge is not very well assembled!

Glad to hear you found the source of the noise, or at least the location. Those kind of noises always drive me crazy too, especially when you can only hear it while driving when there's not much you can do about getting your ears up close to pinpoint where it's coming from!

As far as removing your headliner, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you need to remove the headliner to get the overhead out. I tried replacing my 06 overhead with the electronics from an 05 and I'm pretty sure they both use a spring clip type bracket to secure the plastic overhead to a frame behind the headliner. The 06 has one screw up front and two spring clips on each side that secure it to the overhead. Once you know how it mounts, it's very easy to remove.

If someone else doesn't respond before, I can check tonight to verify how the 05's overhead is mounted to the cab.

My stack rattles my overhead.....it's the light lens that rattles on mine.. put my finger on the lens and it stops

I think Shane explains how to drop the headliner in his cab light write up....I will go look.

From the book...
REMOVAL
  1. Remove the headliner.
  2. Remove the 12 nuts and roll the trim ring off the headliner off the retaining flanges.
INSTALLATION
  1. Position trim ring support flanges over the headliner and seat the trim ring fully.
  2. Install the 12 nuts onto the support studs.

Sounds pretty easy
