How accurate is your fuel gauge?

Mine's not real close unless I have a 45 gallon tank.

I try to fill up around 3/4 tank due to the price of diesel knocking a chunk out of my cash and credit. It holds around 12-13 gallons--substantially more than the gauge would indicate. This weekend, I filled up with the gauge showing a little over half a tank of fuel on board and it held 20.5 gallons.

My old 95 Dodge gasser's gauge was pretty accurate, at least until the sending unit went out. This one looks pretty far off. Maybe it will be consistent with it anyway.

That's about the way mine works, too. It drops really really slowly on the top half, and then plummets like a rock after that... If I fill up when it's reading ~1/2, I can usually stuff over 20 gallons in there, and that's not filling slowly to help with the burping or anything

Same here. At first I would always think "man look at how many miles on half a tank" , then find out it was really 3/4 tank .

in all actuallity I have put 40 gallons in my 35 gallon tank and it was not overflowing! At the empty mark (red) I have put 35 gallons in and let it go farther to the stop peg and put 40 in it.

my gauge is very non-linear. 1/2 tank is really abt. 1/3 tank. However the digital miles left to empty read out is dead-on. I pulled in to a fuel stop recently just as the digital gauge clicked 0 miles to empty. Took 35.2 gal. to fill up. I believe the fuel filter will carry you maybe 3 to 5 miles??

Sounds like my truck. Top half goes forever, bottom half you can practically see the needle dropping.

No, actuallyl your DTE is not dead-on. On one trip last summer, I drove 100 miles with the low fuel light on and 50 with DTE showing 0. Your 35 gallon tank will actually hold around 40. If you read your owner's manual, it tells you that the low fuel light comes on with 15% of tank capacity left and DTE = 0 has about 8% of capacity left.

If you install Dave Kelley's tank vent kit, you can easily use the full capacity of that 40 gallon tank. On that trip where I ran 50 miles with DTE showing 0, I put 37.1 gallons in my 34 gallon tank. That's with Dave's kit. No trickling, clicking, burping, etc. Just a quick, clean easy COMPLETE fillup.

Mine is actually pretty close to dead on. 3/4 full will take approx. 9 gallons of fuel, 1/2 will take close to 18 gallons. DTE reading 18 miles left will take 32.7 gallons. close enough for me.

If the tank actually will hold more than 35 I don't know and never plan on finding out. The only reason I let it go to emty once was to find out how acurate the gauge was for when I go on trips towing. I try not to let the fuel run below 1/4 tank due to I like fuel there to help cool the lift pump.

Motohead, so the tank holds 40 gallons but only 35 is useable, that sounds like a DC engineering feat.

moterhead is right on - I've found my guage to be very accurate - and as the manual says, there is a reserve - I've driven a fair amount after DTE showed 0..but only once - Don't like to let it get that low!

Now I found out a few weeks ago that my new Boat - Rinker Fieta VEE 250 - does NOT have an accurate guage - I was nearly back to the dock, the guage showing between empty & 1/4 and I ran OUT! Luckily it was right near a marina where I paid a FORTUNE to put a bit more gas into the boat so I could get home!

This is a timely post... I ran out of fuel today on the 215 freeway at the 10 interchange. The fuel light came on last night just before I got home. When I left the house this afternoon the DTE said 20. I drove down the mountain (15 miles) and didn't have a chance to fill up. I went about 23 miles past the DTE 0 point and sputtered to a stop on the side of the freeway. Called a buddy and long story short ended up purchasing two two-gallon gas cans (the crappy CARB approved ones) for $26.71 at a 76 station that didn't sell diesel... had my buddy take me across the street to Shell and I put exactly two gallons of diesel into each container... drum roll please... for a total of four gallons. Got a ride back to my parked truck and added those 4 gallons of fuel... turned key... and voila, truck started right up. I drove to my favorite local station two miles away and put 31.23 gallons of fuel into the tank. Add the two fillups together and you get dang near 35 gallons. The next time my DTE gets to around 5 or so I'll be dang sure to fill up!
