Exclamation HELP!! 2005 Ram 2500 front coil spring rattle??

Im not sure how this is possible, but on my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, my passenger front coil spring is rattling against the lower cup. The vibration through the truck is EXTREMELY annoying. I don’t hear it while im driving due to road noise and the Cummins, but when im stopped on flat ground or on an incline it rattles, it doesn’t even help when I put the truck in neutral.

I know…it sounds crazy and im not sure how its doing it, but i can grab it with my hand and try to move it and it wont budge..but when the motor is idling is when it is vibrating. I can whack it with the palm of my hand and make it clang against the lower “cup”, the movement is very VERY slight, but enough to where it’ll make a sound.
There is no bolt tab to hold the spring, it just sits in there.

I checked the link arms on the axle to see if anything was bent, and everything looks fine.

This is a head scratcher…yalls opinions are appreciated.

My truck only has 79,000 miles on it, surely the spring wouldn’t be bad already?

Sure it isn't the bottom shock mount?

Yeah, im positive that its the coil spring. I traced the vibration to the spring, and when i grabbed it, it stopped. I just dont understand how this can happen, you would think the weight of the truck & engine would suffice.

the brake rotor dust shield is known to vibrate too... I'm doubting your spring is loose, as nothing else it holding up that side of your truck..

I've been dealing with this since Oct. '09...

The spring isn't "loose"...its still rigidly seated, its just the coils vibrate against the lip of the cup. I cant keep the spring centered, it walks to one side. I wonder if it could be due a worn out rubber isolator up top?

When I did my lift a number of years ago I recall seeing a rubber mount top and bottom. If you go out check both. You shouldn't have metal to metal (spring to mount) contact. If so, that is the rattle and you need a new mount, or maybe the mount got pushed out and needs to be reseated. Not that hard to do. Shock will have to be removed as it goes through the coil ( but you probably already know that )

Good luck!

I believe it can happen. On my 94, at idle, I can stand at the back of the truck, and watch it rock slightly as it hits on the compression strokes. As it idles, it could lift enough on the coil to take weight off the spring, allowing a slight rattle. Try pushing down on the bumper as it does it, and see if it stops.

The rubber isolator is just on top on my '03 but I honestly can't see how the spring would vibrate.........it holds around 2000K of weight on it after you figure in the engine, frame, and body panels....kinds stumps me....but, hey, I'm no expert.......let us know whatcha find!!

Had the same problem

Had the same problem on a vw jetta. The last inch or so of the spring was broken, but sat nicely in the cup. With all the dirt/mud I couldn't see the break. Pried it with a screwdriver and found the rattlesnake. Could be the same problem or maybe something else.
