Gutting the Cat

How hard is it to do? After I take it off can I just bang out the insides easily with a pole or is it something that has to be cut out? How have yall done it?

Thanks,

Billy J.

Use a ratchet strap around the rear diff to the cat should pop right off. Then use a drill with a long bit and then get ready for your truck to smell and sound like a real diesel!

While removing the cat is illegal, why not just remove it, and buy a 50 dollar Cat test pipe to put in place?

If you take your cat off, and bust out the insides, and then you DO get caught and have to put a cat on, you now have to go buy a 1,000 dollar cat (I know there's aftermarket) to install on your truck?

If you are going to remove it, put a test pipe on, don't destroy your cat. you could problably even sell it to somebody that needs a new one, or to replace an old one, and get a test pipe for free.

Not that I'd know; but there are two layers in there. Take a half inch, long ratchet extension and pound it through. 4 holes make a good sound without being Edit loud. The material is pretty low density like styrofoam, but metal. Does that make sense? You hit it and it dents and crushes. Makes perfect round holes. Don't mess with a drill. Not exactly free flowing but still sounds like something is in there when the inspector taps it with a hammer.

There is a definite difference in smell. Smells like a diesel now.

Fortunately, NC does not have emissions testing yet. I have a straight pipe from the turbo back. I guess I'm one of those Edit....

Strait pipe here to, nothing but 4" pipe from the turbo back It gets a bit loud towing, but sound deadening the cab so I will have the best of both worlds.

I'm not calling anyone an Edit. I loved the sound. But I'm in a sleepy little town with four churches and that's the name I came up with after leaving the firehouse one morning and getting looks from the people in front.

I do have an urge to hear what it sounds like with the Smarty now.

IMO, don't bother. Not enough real gains to be had to justify the potential warranty or inspection issues (translation: big $$$).

I know that i currently live in CA, which sucks, but if I were to take it off, gut it and put it back on wouldn't that still pass an inspection if they do one? To my knowledge all they do is visual, right? So, if it "appeared" to be just fine it should pass???

Not that I would know , but if you gut it and trim perfectly, run a 4" pipe right through welded on either end back up in place, it looks like it's still there and actually acts as a resonator instead of the drone.

Magnaflow makes some aftermarket diesel cats that are supposed to flow better. Has anyone used one of these, are they worth anything? Magnaflow has a great name in exhaust I would think they would make a good unit. As I am in Cali too, I was thinking of going 5" turbo back and using the 5" high-flow cat. This way I keep the appearance and smell of a leagal truck. Anyone else tried this?
