Grr....

I've got a friend that is a Weld dealer, so I was thinking I'd get some Cheyenne 8's for the ol' '03. Apparently not. They told him that I'd need something on the order of 6"-7" of backspace, otherwise the wheels/tires would stick out horribly. No thanks. Now I'm aggrivated that I can't get the wheels I want for my truck. They told him something like 3 to 4 months wait on them. Guess I'll just have to dig in and wait...unreluctantly, however. >

Re:Grr....

That's been the case since 2000 on the Dodge Rams. Super positive offset. That's why I have a set of Weld Monsoons in the garage collecting dust.

Vaughn

Re:Grr....

From what I was told it will be 3 to 4 months. Hopefully, they'll get their act together and make some wheels that will fit.

Re:Grr....

It's not like it's a new thing. It's been 3.5 calendar years since the new offset hit the lot.

Boyd Coddington will do the correct offset I understand. They have a couple decent looking wheels.

Vaughn

Re:Grr....

I can only imagine what a new set of Boyd's cost, though.

Re:Grr....

I got some Welds, Stonecrushers to be exact.

The ones I got have a 4.625 offset, they also offer a 3.625.
Looks like that is the only choice, no matter what wheel size.

Mine stick out 2-3 inches, if we need super positive offset, would the 3.625's stick out an inch further?

Only benefit is I have no control arm rub, just fender rub.

I guess I've always been confused by offset

I was thinking of exchanging them for the 3.625's,
guess I'm glad I didn't.

Great looking wheels IMHO though.

Looking into flares as we speak.

Re:Grr....

Got any pictures? I'd love to see to Stonecrushers on a Dodge.

Backspace, or Offset???

Phox, here's how it works:

When you say OFFSET, you are talking about how far the center line of your tire/wheel is off from the backside mounting pad surface. If It's POSITIVE, the mounting pad is toward the outside of the vehicle compared to the centerline of the wheel. The OFFSET on the 2000+ Rams is 40mm or 1.58"

BACKSPACE is the distance between the back edge of your wheel if you put a straightedge across it and you measure to the mounting pad. On 2000+ Rams with 8" wide wheels the BACKSPACE is 6.0"

SOOOOO

A wheel that is 8" wide with 4.5" backspace will stick out 1.5" further than stock. An 8" wheel will have about 10mm Positive offset. A 3.625 offset will put it way out there at 2.375" (thats Mexi-rider stance )

Wheels with Negative offset are the deep-dished looking ones you usually see on rear-drive vehicles (often rear-drive cars have negative offset wheels). The mouting pad is closer to the vehicle than the center plane of the wheel.

When changing rim Widths:

Try to stick with the same OFFSET, this is one variable that should be kept pretty constant. If you get a 10" wide wheel it will stick out equally toward the vehicle as well as away from it (ie, 1" in each direction compared to 8" wide rim). The BACKSPACE on a 10" wide rim with 40mm OFFSET should be 7"

Soooooo to conclude, when shopping for wheels, ask for +40mm offset, or:

6" Backspace on 8" rim
6.5" Backspace on 9" rim
7.0" Backspace on 10" rim

Good luck finding anything

Hope this makes sense

Vaughn

Re:Grr....

I agree, has to be meaty tires on a 4x4 to stick out, not a lowrider

Your truck looks just like mine except mine's 2-wheel drive:
