Auto Care - How to Get Egg Off a Car?
By Valencia Higuera

June 14, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you’ve ever been victimized by neighborhood pranksters or vandalism, you’ve likely had your car egged. While discovering an egged car is nerve racking, trying to remove the egg and yolk creates further irritation. The key is to remove the egg stain shortly after the incident. However, if the egging occurred overnight, or while you were out of town, the yolk will crust, making removal twice and hard. Here are a few tips for removing egg from cars, without ruining the paint.

Step 1: If possible, do not allow the egg to sit on the car for an extended period, especially in the sun. Every second counts. As soon as you discover the mess, begin steps to clean the vehicle.

Step 2: Using your hand, remove all traces of the egg shell from the car.

Step 3: Once pieces of the egg shell are removed, clean the egg and yolk from the car using a soft towel. It is important to remove all traces of the egg shell. This way, you avoid scratching the surface of the car.

Step 4: Create a mixture using 1 part water and 1 part vinegar.

Step 5: Soak a towel in the mixture, and place it on the egg stain. You may also spray the mixture onto the car using a spray bottle. Allow the towel to sit for at least 15 minutes.

Step 6: Remove the towel. Dry the area using a different towel.

Step 7: If necessary, repeat steps 5 and 6.

Unfortunately, if the egg was not immediately removed, there may be damaged to the car’s paint. Review your insurance policy or vehicle warranty to see whether car egging is covered. If not, be prepared to pay a hefty price to have portions of the vehicle re-painted.

In some instances, victims have been able to locate the person or persons responsible for the damage. Egging can cause additional damage such as broken windows and dents. Moreover, because egging involves damage to private property, victims can file a police report and lawsuit against the suspected persons. Back in 2004, a group of teenagers from California were caught egging several cars. As a result, they were charged with a felony, and ordered to pay $6500 in damages. Because parents become responsible for the actions of their minor children, it is important to discourage any seemingly harmless pranks or paybacks that involve egging a car or causing damage to other people’s property.

I had my car $35,000 car egged at 1am in the morning. I heard the thumps and went to investigate. I realized what had happened and started to spray off my car with a hose. 10 minutes later a truck goes whizzing by and nails my next door neighbors car with a volley of eggs. I proceeded to pick up a stepping stone from the front yard, get in my car and follow them. I find them pulled over a mile or two away so I get up to about 50pmh and toss terra cotta stepping stone out the window and shattered thier front windshield. It doesn't help get the stain out but it sure felt good.

I was a victim of an egg bomb, they just got my grill. =( With the water and vinegar, does it have to be cold, warm or hot? I assume warn but I don't want to damage the paint on the car.

Lastnight my mom and I just got home from trick or treating and when we went inside we heard giant bangs. It sounded like gunshots. My mom looked out the window and screamed "hey". Although we did not find the person or persons who did it we found our house covered in egg. We tried to clean it with the hose but the water was frozen so we were unable to clean the egg right away. So we waited until morning. We both know that these directions are for cleaning egg off your car, but it worked perfectly on the house. Thank you very much.

I tried vinegar and it worked very well, even on most of the old egg which had probably been there for weeks. I used degreaser on the rest and it came off after some (a lot) of effort

I found an egg on my car this morning, but it wasn't the first. The fresh egg washed off with the method described, but he old gooey egg would not come off. The texture was very gummy, and was glued on the windshield as well (I mistook it for bird stuff and didn't handle it right away). I got all the gluey stuff off using a light machine oil such as WD-40. It seems to disolve the gluey substance, although it takes some work to get it off... Let the oil soak in for a few minutes. I used my thumbnail which is softer than the paint and does not scratch.

Mine was also hit, three eggs down the drivers side, worse damage done to the drivers fender, caused a spiral in the paint and also a nice chip in the paint, bad part, I was out of town hunting and it sat for three days in 30 degree weather.

Looks like I will need to re-paint the whole fender, hopefully it will match.

Someday, these kids will have their own property and maybe then they will realize what they had done.............

When does it end?

Last night in stop and go traffic I had a woman in one of those Honda Elements merge into the side of my truck, her mirror hit below my mirror at door handle level. She raked her mirror down the entire side of my truck hitting and breaking both door handles. I immediately pulled over to the side and put on my hazards, she pulls around me and passes me and keeps going? I got back on behind her, took her plate and vehicle description. Fortunately the next exit was where my insurance agent office is, so I was able to report it right away. Today I have to drive 20 miles to the local CHP office to fill out an accident report (Required if damage exceeds $1000.00), then I have to drive 10 miles to get to the nearest drive-in insurance estimate location to have the truck looked at.

Unfortunately, there is no shortage of stupidity. Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Keep us posted on the outcome of the impending exhaustive investigation by your local PD

Fortunately it was on Highway 4, so CHP will be handling it, much more experienced in these situations than the local yokels.

Serves em right!

One night while traveling down a rural interestate some kids hiding in an underpass median were tossing rocks at passing trucks. Before they hit me I noticed a couple of miles up the road two other trucks and a bus pulled onto the right shoulder with their flashers on. In the nanosecond I was thinking to myself "wonder what happened to them why they're all on the shoulder" WHAM! A rock about the size of your fist busted my driver side mirror. You could tell the size of it by the hole it made in the fiberglass backing. I was tooling along at about 70 mph. Had it been two or three feet more to the left it wouldve smashed into my face and killed me! They never did catch the punks
