Gettin to know the new truck

Picked up the new (to me anyway) truck last weekend. It's an '05 dually with 166k on it. Way more miles than I would like but it seems to have been well maintained and if this truck had half the miles it would have been way out of my price range since it's a loaded laramie.

Anyway, a couple observations after having it for about a week:

- first off, I love this truck but there's not much 'truckness' left in these is there? By that I mean they ride so well and are so quiet, I kinda feel like I'm driving a big luxury car. I wish it had more diesel clatter and I even miss the exhaust smell of the older trucks. I don't miss the ride of my '93 though.

- The overhead computer is absolutely worthless for mpg. I knew that it wasn't going to be real accurate but I was expecting it to be off by at most 2 mpg. I reset it when I filled up and let it be for the whole week. After about 450 miles of mostly highway driving it read 21.8 mpg and I thought maybe I was getting as much as 19. Hand calculated it turned out to be 17.1 mpg, not bad at all for a 4wd dually but the computer being off by almost 5 mpg?

- I didn't really want a laramie when I started looking for a truck but now I'm glad I got one. The GPS/Nav system is pretty cool and I love the U-connect phone feature.

Here's a few pics of the new beast:

Good looking truck for that amount of miles!! I think everyone here deals with the overhead mileage being way off. 17 MPG with the 4x4 dually seems to be pretty good.

my `06 was off by about 4 mpg when I first got it. I took it in for a "cold start" tsb reflash a few months after I got it and magically the overhead console now actually works and is accurate -- to within a couple of tenths. I don't know if that applies to the `05s or not, but it's the same drivetrain so it might...

That's interesting, I wonder if a dealer's service department would have some kind of flash specifically to make the overhead more accurate?

This brings up another question, is the mpg usually off by a specific amount like reading 2 mpg high all the time or is it more like a percentage off?

My 04.5 overhead showed worse than hand calculated. I got the reflash that is supposed to make the overhead more accurate and reduce white smoke (never had that occurance). Now the overhead is optomistic by 1.5 mpg usually. I never trust it and never trust anyone that quotes mpg from the overhead. On occaision over many tankfuls you might find the overhead fairly accurate, but not all the time. 17 mpg out of a dually sounds good. My SRW gets about 15.5-16.5 when not towing. Hand calculated.

I haven't found my overhead to be consistently off by the same amount every time. Normally off by about 2 MPG, sometimes almost 3...
