Garage Door Clearance

Been lurking here for quite a while, enjoying the sharing of knowledge in the Forums, now I have a question.

Contacted a local dealer yesterday regarding ordering a 2004.5 2500 SLT 4x4 Quad with the Cummins. This morning I checked the Dodge web site for height specs on this truck. The specs page showed it to have a height of 79.0 inches. I measured my garage door clearance, it comes in at 79.75 inches.

There is not much room for error. I was wanting to upgrade to 285's when the truck arrives, however that may be out of the question.

It's important to me that I garage my truck!

I defer to the experts on this one, anyone run into a similar problem?

Ours fits nicely in the garage, even with the 285 tires. No problems here.

Sounds too close. Same problem here. The door jam may be high enough but if the bottom of the garage door doesn't go all the way to the top of the jam you're gonna rub the bottom of the door. I had the same problem and moved the garage door springs back another 3.5 inches (width of a 2x4) so the door gets pulled further inside the tracks. ( I don't have a power garage door lift)
So measure your opening with the door open and even with a large enough opening, you may discover you have to back the truck in because of the driveway apogee that keeps water from running into the garage may be too steep.

Mine doesn't even come close.....Check out my gallery pictures. With my workbench in the back of the Garage, there's no way it would fit. Plus I figure what's really the point of garaging a truck...the weather gives it character. Besides, if I kept the truck in the garage, the woman would complain every morning when there is frost on her car...haha.

2 Things

They make a high rise kit for garage doors...available at an Overhead Door Company and.....

I had the rock removed and the doors taken out..... Once that was done I had commercial doors and masonary work done.

Baby has a spot now!

All of this was for my lifted 01

the relocation "high rise" kit from the Garage door Company should help you out on your quest.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think the next step before ordering is to take one out for a test drive and drop by the house for a test fit, after adjusting the door up to maximum height. I checked and can get an inch more out of it by adjusting the door to come up flush with the molding. I'm hoping this will work and then the worst case scenario will be having to stay with 265 tires in an aftermarket, all terrain type of tire.

By the way, I decided to order the new truck with the Cast Aluminum Wheel option. I think they'd be easier to sell if I decide to add aftermarket wheels, plus the Cast Aluminums look pretty good too.

I have 9ft high and 11ft wide garage doors and put a huge canopy and 4 KC Hilites on top and I make it in the door with 6 inches to spare...and i settled for a smaller canopy than i wanted so I could get it in the garage...the moral of the story...when building a garage put in 12 ft walls so you can have a Big door

RickE-

You bring your sawzall, I'll bring my chainsaw and we'll meet at TexasZach's house for some garage door remodeling.

If you mount these outside the door, clearance will no longer be a problem.

However you WILL get to know the local tire salesman on a first name basis.

If you put a cap on the bed remember it will rise up at the rear. I had to have a special cap made that tapers down toward the back to get the truck into the garage.

This is also an issue in public parking garages and a good reason to never go into a city.

Been meaning to write all day although I'm kind of enjoying the humorous responses.

Called my salesman and he told me to come get a truck to test fit in the garage. No problem, we are good to go and ready to launch. After seeing the cast aluminum wheels in person, I'm going to pass on them and just go aftermarket wheels and tires. Need to research wheels that will fit an '04, my buddy at Discount Tire said the stud size on the new 2500 and 3500 Dodges are unique and this drastically narrows the selection of wheels that will work. Haven't heard this one before this afternoon, need to research. Mainly wanting to fill up wheel well but not extend out too far from fenders. Worse case scenario is someone manufacturing quality COLOR KEYED flares?

The truck I drove yesterday was a 305/355, 48RE very similar to what I'm going to order, wrong color and minus a few options (including the newer 325 hp engine). Haven't driven a diesel since I sold my '99 PSD two years ago, LOVE THE CUMMINS.

Appreciate all the responses and input my friends......

If you lower the truck and put in a horn that plays "La Cucaracha" you should be able to fit! You guys in Texas should be able to get this set-up done cheap on your trucks! -Steve
