Fuel leaking when filling tank

I got my truck back from the body shop (another story to be told), and they had done some work on the driver's rear quarterpanel. When I fill the truck all the way full, as the tank starts gurgling it leaks from on the top of the tank, mainly in front of the band holding the tank in place.

I've checked the filler neck to make sure the connections were good, and they seem to be, and also the overflow hose. The leak seems to be coming from around the plastic "lid" on top, with electronics and a few hoses running in and out. The Overflow hose side, not the main fill tube side. Is there some kind of valve or something that I may be able to fix myself up there? It seems to be on pretty tight....

I know the body guy took off the fuel door, and he put the fuel cap leash back on wrong, so I want them to fix that. What could he have done to cause the leak, or was it the accident? The leak only happens when the tank is filling all the way- if I stop 3 or 4 gallons short of full, no leak (or at least I didn't notice).

Any thoughts and help is appreciated!

That's the fuel tank module you see on top.

If your truck took a good whack, and no fuel leaks when it's running, you probably have a busted tank or the ring that holds the top of the module could be broken.

I would run it almost dry and pull the tank to investigate.

PS. You'll get a better response if you make a signature similar to the one I have...

Sounds to me like they didn't get the gasket put back in right. I made the same mistake the first time I dropped the tank on the '05 to put the vent mod in.

Thanks for the replies. I had a sig, need to check my settings to see if it will show up.

I'll investigate and see if they dropped the tank when working on it. If not, what's the process? It looks like undoing the filler neck and the overflow tube, then undo the belt holding it in place, yes?

Pretty much, there are two straps holding the tank in place, and you will want to make sure you have good support under the tank so you can remove the fuel line connectors once you drop the tank a bit.

I've got a jack, I'll put a support board up to it, then lower slowly. That way I'll be able to stop it when needed. Does that fuel module just screw on and off the top of the tank, after I disconnect everything from it? I'm hoping and praying the body shop dropped the tank to replace the quarterpanel, then they have to fix it.

I can't seem to get my sig to show up-

04.5, Quad cab, short bed, 4x4, no mods, auto tranny.

It's been a long time now, and I know they are different than on the 2nd gen trucks, but yes. You might need a strap wrench or equivalent, mine was on there like no tomorrow.
