Front receiver

Re:Front receiver
Ok, I don't have my memory stick with me (it has photos), but here is the procedure:

If your truck did not come with factory tow hooks, stop by your dodge dealer and get a really good look at a truck that has them, so you understand the basic mounting of these receiver tubes.

You'll need:
2 steel plates, 1/2" x 5" x 7" (a shop will probably give you these from their scrap pile, or charge you a dollar)

8 1/2" diameter bolts/nuts/washers (1 1/2" or 2" long, grade 8 only) ($3.50)

2 2" ID (2.5" OD) 6" long receiver tubes. these are made by putnam, brophy, draw-tite, etc. you can order them online from truckperformance.com, or see you local trailer parts store. )you can cut these down to 5" long for a little cleaner appearance. ($11.00 each)

A welder, preferably tig or smaw.

A drill press and a hand drill, and common hand tools.

I herculined them, but you could also paint or powdercoat.
herculiner is the best in my opinion.

Instructions:

1. get yourself 2 half inch thick steel plates, 4" X 7".
2. Drill the four hole pattern for factory tow hooks onto the plate. (the pattern is 2" x 4 7/8". Don't let your burn-out parts guy at the mopar dealership tell you they're 2x5 because they're not!). Use 1/2" holes, and center the pattern on your 4x7 plate.
3. Drill out your factory tow hook holes to 1/2 inch (this is just a minor enlargement.)
4. Bolt your plates to the factory holes on your bumper bracket. Now, if your truck came with factory hooks, there is already an open gap in your bumper. If it did not, you need to cut a 2.5" square opening in your plastic valence for the receiver to protrude. Be sure you know where you want the tube to protrude before you hack up too much plastic. I used a dremel tool with a cutting wheel.
5. now that you can see your 1/2" thick plate through the front of the bumper, slide the reciever tube through the bumper, and trace the OD of the tube on the 1/2" plate, so you mark where you want to weld.
6. Weld the tube to the plate. Do this on a bench, don't try it on your truck! You may want to make sure that the 5/8" hole for your receiver pin is horizontal.
7. Herculine, powdercoat, or paint your left and right hitches you just welded. (be sure not to go too thick on the ID of the receiver.)
8. Take off the front bumper, and re-install with the front hitches sliding through the gap in the bumper. DO NOT HANDLE THE BUMPER BY YOURSELF, IT WILL NOT FEEL GOOD ON YOUR BACK!

I'll try to remember the photos tomorrow

Voila!
