Fog Light Modification??

i know that it has been posted on here before but i'm not smart enough to make the search function work. what is the fog light mod. for the 3 gen trucks? if someone could point me to the thread i would very much appreicate it. i think that you have to trim a little off the edge of a 9005 bulb?

thanks in advance

britt

Yup, get a 9005 bulb, and your stock bulb. Look at the TOP finger of the 9005 bulb and notice how it's a bit wider and offcentered than the stock one. Toe-nail clippers to dremels work fine, I used a small pair of dikes to trim it to make it look somewhat like the stock one. The next part is kind of hard, you have to use a knife and remove the 2 lines INSIDE the connector, where the plug goes. The stock ones only have 1 line down the middle, the 9005 have 2 off-center. Remove them both, I used my pocket knife, and some leverage against the side of the case, and popped them off in one peice each. Then go to Autozone again (laughs) and pick up a box of A/C o-rings, the largest 2 orings in that box go on your 9005 bulbs, then install and forget 'em

Check this article from the TDR:

Here's a link from the TDR that will answer most, if not all, of your questions. I performed the mod and there's a significant difference. I purchased the connectors; I'm not sure if they're available for sale on the site any more.

you can buy the fogzilla kit from WWW.genosgarage.com. it is just a pigtail to plug the factory wiring into the 9005's w/o modifying any wiring.

9005 are high beam bulbs, I think they're 100watt lights, the fogs are brighter than the headlights.

I just did this mod and it works great, silverstars in the fogs and the headlights, no complaints from oncomming traffic either. I used the next size up on the o ring from the one the bright box company recomends, they suggest a #114, i used #115,makes for a snugger fit when inserted into the fog light, also used a little of that silicone lube that is compatible with rubber on the rings, couldn't find silicone o rings. The size of the #115 rings is: i.d. 11/16--o.d. 7/8--section 3/32. Hope this helps.

Just did the mod.

Bought GE Nighthawk 9005 bulbs at Wal Mart for about $30 (2 pack). The box they came in make them sound like the best thing out there....imagine that. Wish I had the time and money to do a side-by-side comparison because although they are brighter than the OEM fog lights they didn't "wow" me. Now I'm thinking I should have bought the less expensive 9005s.

Put on nitrile gloves to protect the bulbs from skin oil. Tried using toenail clippers on the top blade but the plastic is very hard/brittle. Although it worked after slowly chipping away at it I was wondering when the whole housing was going to crack. On the next bulb I used a hacksaw blade to trim the top finger which worked MUCH better. I used a utility knife and 1/4" chisel to trim the two ribs inside the socket. Too lazy to drive to Autozone so I tried using the O-rings in my plumbing repair kit. None of them worked. The o-rings off the OEM bulbs seemed to fit OK and when I installed the 9005s they seemed snug so I guess time will tell if there is a good seal.

Even with the gloves I wiped the bulbs down with a napkin soaked with rubbing alcohol.

After putting one 9005 in I turned on the fogs and the 9005 was brighter and whiter but it wasn't a drastic difference.

It's a good mod, I also wired in a relay fired by the high beams to trigger the fogs. Now I can have fogs and highs.

Triplenickel.....would you be so kind as to explain/diagram how you wired the relay so that you have the fogs on with the highbeams please.

I just installed the relays required to have the fogs and low beams come on when the high beams are on. I'm going to start a new thread titled, "Turning On Fog Lights and Low Beams with High Beams"

These high beams are worthless so something had to be done.
