First Winter - rough idle - chugging?
Hi guys,
This is sort of a continuation of another thread. At 11000 miles my truck started to get a rough idle at times and a bad miss when barely on the throttle after an upshift into OD, engine warm or cold. Happened right after I had filled up the tank and had mistaking used about a pint of Power service summer (not winter) diesel kleen in the tank - maybe as high as 20 ounces. Anyway, after running through about a 1/2 tank of that the symptom developed and I suspected bad fuel from the station or too much additive. I changed my fuel filter and it is greatly improved - went away completely at first. Then I filled the tank to dilute the last fuel some. Now, if I idle a while (its below 32 here right now), it may idle rough and chug a little at the start but the miss at speed in OD has never come back. Seems like getting into it a little makes it go away for a while and i dont really tow much so thought it might blow it out a little. Am I getting dirty fuel injectors? Thought PS would have prevented that and with the amount I accidentally used, they should be clean now.
Would you suspect I am filling a second fuel filter with crap from bad fuel? just usual symptoms when the truck is not worked hard enough?
First batch of winter fuel or summer fuel still at the station?
Just want some ideas. I might take it back to the dealership to take a look but it is throwing no codes or anything. I am fearing injector problems (hopefully I am just paranoid because of the power steering pump that went bad at 6000 miles) but my gas mileage has been great since the oil change and the fuel filter change.

I had some of those issues, bought my truck in February 2006, only were a problem for a month or so then once the weather warmed up and no more winter fuel - gone. Then along came winter #2, now it's the new ULSD fuel, again winter fuel, a little rough idle, etc. I used PS/Winter Blend and it did kind of settle down but did not go away until the end of the winter fuel and warmer temps.
Fast Forward to NOW - beginning of winter, winter fuel, a little rough idle is now back as we started getting REALLY cold. We had snow a couple nights ago, temps really cold, super heavy frost/fog that am, I started the truck and the rough idle is now back again, and so is the winter fuel. THIS TIME the Gauge Light came on and I threw a couple codes - P0071 and P2609.
The P0071 is the Intake Air Temp Sensor Rationality and the P2609 is No Voltage Drop Seen From Intake Air Heaters. Interestingly enough, the barometric pressure was extremely low at that time, and also at the other times my rough idle was happening also. You also need to know that I live at 7K ft elevation, which all by itself makes these trucks run a little different. The only thing that is different from last winter to this one is that I installed the Ice Box CAI/Amsoil nano filter/Outerwears to the intake. My grid heaters have been functioning properly thus far this year BUT must have not been functioning right at the startup that threw the codes. The fog/clouds were real thick, the frost was real thick - in fact it looked like barbed wire was on everything. The only thing I can figure out about the codes is that the air was real moisture dense and then the temps dropped suddenly making everything freeze up to the point where the electronics was skewed.
