Question Fender Lip Rusting

My rear fenders keep getting surface rust (Starting to pit a bit) on the part that is bent in toward the frame. I have chrome surrounds, but they only cover about 1/2" of the painted part. They only go in far enough to put the Stainless sheet metal screws in that hold the rings on. If I use the proper chemicals to remove all the rust, then spray on some clearcoat, will it come back? I was thinking about doing that, then putting on the fender flares/guards like those on the Power Wagons. Will they cover that part completely? Will this work, or do I have to do something else? Ideas??

You can take it to the dealer and have them look at it. I had my rear bumper replaced after someone hit me, and the service guy noticed the rust. He told me to make an appointment and bring it in, they will replace the whole panel since it is still under warranty. If you have rust spots showing up and you have the 05 in the sig, it should be covered under the paint/sheetmetal warranty

Thanks! I thought that was just for rust that "perforates" or goes right through.

Kinda of mixed results whether the dealer will support you or not. If it is in an area that receives alot of rock chips/salt like the fender lip you may find certain dealers are unwilling to fix it. I know the brushwacker fender flares that i purchased covered that area and help protect it from rock chips.

research this

There is a system on the market that supposedly prevents rusting. I haven't looked into it much yet but it sounds like interesting technology. Google ...CounterAct... and see what you think.
