I agree that this is the problem.
Next time have the tire shop use the weights that mount on the backside, or underside of the wheel. You won't see all that lead.

They should blame it on the tire. It's obvious to me that the "bead protector" has been squeezing the circumfrence of the rim, popping the chrome off in that one spot. If you had a wider rim this wouldn't occur. Have you run really low pressure in that tire before? That would do it, too. The chrome is cheap, but it wouldn't have done it with the stock tire....

Personally I every get my tires balanced anymore. I have installed Centramatic Automatic Balaners My fater use to use these on his 1970 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup that had split rims on it.
Try them you can use them on any type of tire or wheel combo.

Maximum OD on stock 4X4 3rd gen?

What is the maximum OD (tire size) that will fit the new trucks? I'm probably going to buy a 2500/Quad cab?/4X4/CTD soon and I want to have my tires and wheels lined up already.

Dan, in your signature you mention 35's on your truck. Is it lifted, or stock height? I don't want to lift it if I don't have to, but I'd at least like to run 35's on it, for the pumpkin clearance.

my 315's are balaced quite nicely. i have no weights on the outsides [i can't stand how they look] and on one of them i have no weights on the inside, and the other 3 have no more than one weight on them [i never really looked at the weight, but the largest is the one that is about 3" long, the other 2 have the 1.5" long ones]

you got two options . 1. is you can have weights on both sides of the wheel and a have smooth ride 2. you can have those ugly devils on the backside of the wheel out of sight and have the lumber wagon ride


There is a 3rd option, you can balance the wheel on the inside with "sticky" weights and weights on the backside. If done properly it will also give a smooth ride.

For any truck tire I absolutely agree that they need to be road force balanced by a reputable shop, if possible have the rims measued as well before hand to check for high/low spots. The high spot should be matched up to the low spot of the tire for optimum vibration cancellations and minimum amount of weight added. Ideally the weights should go on both sides of the wheel for best results, but adhessive weights struck to the inside of the wheel to keep the wheel appearance clean is also acceptable. On the BMW's I work on, even the 20 x 10 rims with 345/35r20 tires usually take less than an ounce on either side of the wheel to balance. Weight required also depends greatly on the quality of the tire being used. I have BGF at tires on my truck and will never again after they wear out. Switching to Toyo MT 295/70r17, heard very good wear stories for these tires, and any I have seen have taken very little weight to balance. Just my .02, well maybe.12.
