My in-laws bought the x-warranty on their Dodge caravan - two new tranny's and a new engine later they were glad that they did. Did I buy one on my '03 or '05 CTD - nope. '03 got trashed, so that was a good decision (not to buy) and the '05 seems to be a "good year", minor problems got fixied within the first year warranty.

Warranty

Now,

I was told last night when they tried to sell me one that if I did not use it that I would get my money back at the end of the contract (he was pushing a 5 year, 100,000 mile bumper to bumper). Told him I would think about it, and get back to him. I have never heard of DC doing that....has anyone else?

Yes all Extended warrantys are like that they give a prorated amount back at any time that you call and cancel.

???

This was that at the end of 5 years, you do not use it in any way, your FULL purchase amount is returned...which makes that hard to believe if the dealer has mark-up of these things?

I really, really doubt it (I just got a DC 7/100K MAX on my new truck, and it is not that way). Ask the salesperson to show you the part of the contract that confirms that statement. Most are pro-rated if terminated early, but are not refunded at the end of the term.

I called Chrysler direct, and they DO sell extended warranties that if not used by the end of its contract you receive the COMPLETE purchase price that you paid for the warranty back. The DC gal told me that not many dealers try to sell these, and she was always curious as to why?

I have to add my two cents. I bought a 2003 Ford F350. The extended warrenty never paid for repair on that truck. It did paid for 95+ days of rental cars while the truck was in the shop. Ford bought that truck back and replaced it with a 2005 F350. Ford transfered the extended warrenty to the new truck. Man, am I glad they did, as I used it again for rental cars. I had a total of 115 days in rental cars, at $28 dollars a day. I paid $1200 for the warrenty, and they paid $3200-3300 in rental car fees. End result, you take a risk. But if it saves your butt you can be glad you had it. I have it on my new dodge, but I hope that I never have to use it. Anthony
