ECM protection on stock truck
I have a stock 06 and tow a 5er that weighs in around 12,500# loaded up, in the factory programming are there protections for things like EGT's?

Many thing are programmed in the ECM to protect the motor. Some can put the ECM in limp mode only allowing slow speed travel <25 miles so not to strand you out in the hills ect. Use the truck and as long as it is stock you really only have to worry about failures that the ECM can not do anythin about eg tranny failure, blown head gasket, dead pump ect. If your exhuast gets too high it will de-fuel the engine to a safe area and you may not even know it. Keep a good maintenance schedule and enjoy your trip

There is no built-in protection for EGTs as the ECM cannot read EGT from anywhere. It will protect the engine as it reads other symptoms of high EGT (i.e. high coolant temp) and then de-fuel accordingly. But the ECM can only react to variables it can sense (oil pressure, coolant temp, trans temp). EGTs are only available once you install a thermocouple in the exhaust stream.
