Dually tire pressures?

A friend had new tires put on his 95 dually Ram and they had
his rear tires aired to 60 lb's. He said he was going to Nebraska
the next day( from Az ). I told him he should let his back tires
down to about 45 lbs and front about 55lbs. I said his back
tires running empty with 60lbs the truck would ride real harsh,
and ride better at 45lbs.He then went and asked the dealer
and the dealer said absalutely not-only run it at 60lbs or the
tires would come apart.I say the dealer only wants the tires to
ware out sooner etc. What do you guys think?

Re:Dually tire pressures?

I called 2 other tire dealers-1 said 45 lbs was the safer
pessure and 1 said 60 lbs was about rite. I think on wet
roads the lower pessure gives more traction so it would
be what I would use. What do you 2nd gen trck owners
use?

Mine's an oldie, but the manual says if you're unloaded - 45 psi all around. I've heard you shouldn't go below that on an LT tire because it causes excessive sidewall flex. My truck feels real "nervous" with 60 psi empty, 45 is much more stable.

"I think" that as long as you don't reduce pressures to the point where the tire bulges rub against each other, you'll be fine. 'Least thats how I thought when I had my old CC ford big dooley. I think I used to run around 45-50 in them back aft. Then again, at 6-8 mpg I didn't drive it much either......

Re:Dually tire pressures?

The door sticker on my 01 3500 says 50 rear and 55 front. I have ran both at 60 psi since day one. Tires now have over 66000 miles. Should I remove some air to make them last longer :

Re:Dually tire pressures?

I pull heavy loads almost every mile. And I have the tires on my 03 3500DRW set at 70 psi rear, and 60 psi front. It rides good that way. But that is with the 235/80/17's..

Re:Dually tire pressures?

You must haul alot with 70# in the rear. That would not be very comfortable when running unloaded. I am running 60# front and 50# rear.

Re:Dually tire pressures?

80% of my trucks miles are at or above max GCWR so I have to keep em at 70psi. I run 80 psi in my Chevy.

Re:Dually tire pressures?

Thanks for all the different opinions. Here where I live we
have some steep dirt roads that arent kept up,and I found it
hard to climb some of them with 60lbs air in back. So when I ran them at 45lbs its been no praublem. And I have to drive in
snow sometimes and I figured the extra traction there and on
wet roads was wirth leaving them at 45 in back for safety
reasons. I was still able to get 48000 miles on my first set of
tires. Thanks

Re:Dually tire pressures?

I have expiremented with every range from 45 up to 80. I got 75000 miles out of the first set of tires running 65 in the rear and 70 in the front and rotating every 9000 miles. Even at 75000 miles, the tread was flat across on all six and they would have gone farther had I wanted to push them. I pull up to 26000 pounds on ocassion also.
