is driving a 2500 "more work" than a 1500?

1500's are rack and pinion, but 2500's and 3500's are recirculating ball.

Is it possible that this is a 4x4 and 4x2 difference? I just went out and looked again, and that certainly looks like a rack and pinion steering box on my 2wd '03 2500.

Yep, you're right. I just checked the specs again and the 4X2 does get a rack and pinion setup while the 4X4 gets recirculating ball.
