I hate to tell you but a dump truck with a moderate load will stop faster than the same truck empty. Even if his pickup was operating properly, even an empty trailer like his will increase the stopping distance unless he has trailer brakes and they're operating correctly and properly adjusted. In the case of a pickup pulling a trailer with no brakes as you apply the truck brakes, the nose of the truck will drop and the rear will start to rise. The additional weight of the trailer will push on the truck in two directions, forward and upward. This will decrease the braking efficiency of the rear wheels by removing weight from them, lengthening the stopping distance. I see only go fast mods in his sig. No mention of a brake controller.

true, true, true...and a loaded truck will stop better than a moderate loaded truck.

C'mon all you trucker guys.....I mean I know that much, and I only got a class B FD restricted DL....air brake and tank endorsed....tank or dump bed are designed with the air brakes to actually be better suited to stop with a load closer to max than competly empty....

to get back to the point, glad you werent hurt, and glad to hear Ins sounds like they arnt jerking ya!!!

He has a 6 speed, even without trailer brakes it would not affect stopping distance by any amount, you should be able to put your head into the windshield easily with truck brakes and downshifting. I think it's more of the case of not paying attention or there is more to the story, ain't a chance that truck is stopping faster then a pickup. Just refuse to buy that story...

nobody is telling you to buy anything, i posted here just to show that i crashed my truck not to find out who was at fault.
yes i have a brake controller, i just don't list everything that i put on my truck, BUT the trailer that i was pulling didn't have good working brakes.
can you see my tires on the pics? no right, maybe my tires are bold? there is too many things that could factor the accident, but like i said that's not why i posted it here.

Bald tires or not properly working brakes, you'd be better to say it was because you were busy watching a movie I guess I am tired of sitting in traffic because of accidents from people that cannot drive or just can't be bothered to pay attention. For the safety of everyone on the road around you, please don't pull that trailer loaded......

Ozpall, my apologizes to you. I wasn't trying to make a case out of you. You know what happened. We have allot of young and inexperienced drivers reading these posts. Coming from a law enforcement background I don't like seeing them given incorrect information. I was just trying to clear up a couple of inaccurate pieces of that info. Sorry for the hijack.

I don't know how a gravel trucks stops, actually I do, because i've driven one quite a few times There is a reason everyone says to give semis room, because they cannot stop as fast as you! Loaded, unloaded, if you can't stop your pickup faster then a semi, you've got some problems. I could put my truck to a stop from 100 MPH with a empty trailer like that faster then a gravel truck from 60 MPH loaded or unloaded (and no they don't stop faster loaded, trust me on that), not to mention it looks like it was in the city so he couldn't even use the Jake....

I'm done bashing on this thread, but the point is, you should know how your truck operates and give yourself ample room, there is no excuses to rear end someone because of a bit of water on the road.

Mocho, ozpall just posted to show what had happened (feel for you by the way, going through insurance for repairs right now), not to get jumped on about braking distances etc. Your posts were completely uncalled for, and really do not contribute to the thread at all. Please don't be the "you don't know how to drive" guy, especially seeing that the accident has already happened. Not trying to pick a fight, or hurt anybody feelings, just reminding that this forum is to help people, not belittle them.

did the same thing about 2 years back, pullin a loaded car trailer. had about 3000 pounds on. i hit a kia tho. crumple snout on the dodge worked great. $280 to repaint the kia bumper (didnt even need to be replaced)
$3800 to repair my truck and no paint was involved. got the radiator forward. grille just slid under the hood never scratched it. headlights and bumper were toast.

I see some you guys on here blowing about that semi's loaded or unloaded can't stop quick, etc.... etc.... We I know from a fact that after logging 130,000 on a 2007 KW with a 39' Alum. End Dump.....a loaded truck will stop faster than an unloaded truck..fact..not fiction. Read the DOT manual if you want to make sure. But I know from personal experience that I can stop faster loaded. Anyways..with my dodge and pulling a trailer I reley more on down shifting more than my brakes, then I use trailer brakes before I finally resort to the truck brakes. Just my experiences..it stinks that a nice truck had to get tore up, but it happens and unforntunely rain main the whole thing worse.
