Did you consider running the intake hose down to the hole in the bumper to get a ram air effect?

 

i figured it would work fine this way, and if it faces forward I figured it would ingest more than just air. Water, bugs, rocks, birds! Hehe!

 

I wonder if anyone makes a good fitting inlet that would fit the back of the bumper there? I'm wanting to make one of these cold air intakes but I refuse to spend $500+ on something that simple.

 

When you put the flange to the box did you just use the bolts or did you use some sort of RTV Sensor Safe Silicon as well! I had a Tacoma where I did a mod similar but used a 4" deck plate from a marine store so I could close it up with the supplied lid....Mounted it to the front of the box where this box is different

 

Sealed it up with some RTV. Should I have used some sensor sensitive stuff?

 

You should be safe....the sensor safe stuff is for when you put it all together and start it up and drive vs. letting it dry/cure for 24hrs.

 

Well the UPS man just dropped off my hose kit. The dust hood will be the flange for the air box.[see link in 1st post] I'll use a drain cover like in Kawiram pic on the bottom. I'm going to cut out the grate from the drain cover & use 1/4'' screen over it. I was thinking 5 or 6'' at 1st too, but I have two lines running under the air box & that shot the 6''
inlet. Look at Kawram 1st pic in post #31. There's a bracket with a hole in the center to the left & under the hose. I tried to get a piece of 5'' alum. tube though but couldn't because of that bracket. But 4'' is still bigger than the opening on top of the air box lid. I called & talked to someone about the one on the net for $99.00. He told me the drop tube they sell is only 3''.

 

A couple of things about this. I had my home built set-up on my '04 for about 2yrs with no grating or screening on the opening. In that time it never sucked anything into the air fliter box. I did not put anything there as I did not want to restrict the airflow. You also do not really need to seal the flange to the bottom of the box as it is on the dirty side of the filter.

I forgot to add that I ended up not using the hose clamp as I decided to pop rivet the tubing into the flange, made for a cleaner install.

As for the dealer, you shouldn't have a problem adding this mod as you are only opening up the box. I asked the dealer I bought my truck from about this before I started the project he said there was not an issue with it.

 

I just used 4" coragated drian pipe, cut the hole in the filter box slightly smaller and it was a "snap" fit. the pipe is about 24", just behind the bumper. It took 1/2 hour, pipes about $10 for 25 feet, do 12 trucks! You can get elbows or tee's if you don't want your inlet pointed down

 

I'm off to see the Wizard.... Sorry got carried away with all these awesome ideas. I'm heading to Home Depot for a parts run.

 

Anyhow - check out what I found at work!! It's exactly 4" o.d. Samples are the best

Now to head to Home Despot (misspelling intended) for some hose, hose clamps, rivets/bolts, and some RTV...

 

Alrighty - how does this look guys? You can't tell from the pictures, but I did put some sealant between the bottom of the air box and the flange. Probably not critical as the box had two small holes in the bottom to begin with, but either way, it didn't hurt. Ideally I would like to find some 4" i.d. smooth, flexible, black tubing, but the dryer hose will do for now. I went with the atrium drain because it offered more flow than a flat 4" drain would have, but with similar small animal filtering characteristics
