Smile Buzzes, rattles, squeaks

My truck had some pesky noises, I ignored them for a while and used the radio to drown them out, but I like peace and quiet sometimes and the rattles and squeaks annoyed me. So I tracked some down this morning and I thought I'd share what I found.

4x4 manual shifter (I actually fixed this months ago), seems to buzz on the pivot bushing or something. Pushing sideways on the shifter would cause it to stop temporarily. A small shot of WD40 on the pivot bushing took care of it.

Seatbelt/b post rattle, mine was a small buzz that came and went with rpm, but it seemed to be right next to my ear. I thought it was the upper seatbelt anchor. Actually it was the retractor rattling on the post and resonating up through the post. Unbolt the upper belt anchor, pull the plastic off the post (it's easy, start at the top, it just snaps on) the retractor is on the bottom of the post. Check my pic gallery and you can see how my retractor had a small metal hook that was against the post. I used a screwdriver with a twisting motion to make the slot in the post larger so the hook wouldn't touch the post. What intresting is there is felt strips under the hooks to stop rattles also.

Dash rattle. I started hearing a buzzing noise at a certain rpm that sounded like it was coming from the passenger side dash or maybe the front of the pass. door panel. Well it wasn't, it was the bracket that holds the tire tools and jack under the passenger seat. It resonates in the passenger floor and sounds like it's the dash or passenger door panel. I bent the bracket that holds the lug wrench and jack handle forward slightly with my hand and it stopped.

Windows. My windows made a rattle/squeak when rolled up tightly. In fact the door panels flex outward slightly when the windows are all the way up and lowering the window ever so slightly made it stop. My truck has the tow mirrors, it was a bolt that hold the mirrors on that would rattle when the window made the door panel bow out. I put a rubber plumbing washer under the bolt. Just about any type rubber washer or gasket will work.

Door panels squeaking. My door panels will squeak when driving, especially if I have my arm on the armrest and on a not so smooth road. It's the plastic door panel rubbing on the door. I tried tape, it worked for a while, but it's back. I'm still working on this one, but I'm going to try felt strips between the door and door panel.

Hope this can help someone. It has sure made driving my truck more peaceful.

Thanks.

I think I have the "tire tool" rattle also. I've been thinking it was the passenger door but now that I've read your post I'll take a closer look at the tire tools.

Good work!

i got some rubber bushings or mounts under the truck that are squeaking now that drive me nuts. they only squeek when powering in reversing or when coasting in forward. and i have a sorta metallic squeek coming from the front right hub... after a good rain storm, the noises go away for a while, until they dry up again... need to get under there with the silicon spray when my days off come again..

Had the exact vibration coming from my driver's side seat belt retractor. I couldn't make it stop by bending the holes so I put a thin piece of belting between the two hangers and tightened the main bolt back down. Works great.

I also had the door panel rattle issues. I removed the door panels (4 phillip head screws and 10mm bolt for the door pull) and installed large chunks foam between the panel and the interior door. Only rattles I get now is during startup and shutdowns.

I had the door panel squeaking issue. It was not the panel rubbing against the door. The panel is made up of more than one piece, one part of the panel was causing a squeak when rubbing against the other half. The passenger side was fine. Dealership said they would replace the panel. Never happened.

I have had a noise that sounded like a bearing or gear type of noise under the dash. Come to find out it was the insulation piece that is behind the engine and it was hanging down some, about 2" or so. I tried tape but Liquid Nails took care of that once and for all. No more hearing the back of the motor inside any longer.

At the Diamler Chrysler plant in Newark, DE they have a "Shaker" they used to mount the Durangos to and mic them to see what kind of noises (BSR's) they could produce.
Back then I wouldn't be suprised if parts actually FELL off the truck!

I have a passenger seat squeek, very annoying. I got so agitated one night I pulled the J clip up front and lifted the cushion to see if there was something obvious making the noise, no luck.

They used to put a sheet of plastic (slipperly kind of baggie) between the spring and the foam on the front rows, otherwise the foam would buzz against the metal.

Along these lines, my truck has a couple of noises coming from the doors as well, but I think it's the actual door seals rubbing... What do you guys use to lube your door seals?

My headliner is buzzing @ interstate speeds while towing. If I pull down on the LE of the liner it will stop. I still havent fixed it yet but I think I will get some tubular weatherstripping and stuff it above the headliner.

Update on the door squeak:

As is posted above it is actually the different peices of the door panel rubbing each other and making noise. I've used a couple shots of WD40 to take care of them. I put the spray tube in the seams and then wipe off what little gets on the surface of the panel. This has worked on the drivers door for sometime now.

I've got peace and quite in the cab, but now I'm hearing a sqeak (sounds like metal rubbing on rubber) from the front of the truck on rough roads/bumps. I haven't had any success finding this one. Any ideas?

Had the same squeak coming the front of my truck. My Dad's truck has the same thing. When the hood of the truck is shut, the grill of the truck is resting against 2 bumpers (One on each side). I shot these bumpers with Silicone and it fixes it for around a month. There is probably a better fix, but I'm too lazy to think one up.

I think, if I remember, that someone mentioned the rubber piece or plastic piece that is on the left side of intercooler (looking at the motor from the front) that may cause rattles. May even be a TSB on it but not sure.

I am starting to get a few more rattles and things on my truck now. It just turned 30,000 but I also have let down a little on the cleaning and care for it since Winter has been here in VT. Now since spring is among us, time to start tracking them down.... (Hate these stupid pot holes and frost heaves... or should I say Frost JUMPS )
