Not all fuel is created equally. Lots of foam means lots of air in the fuel. What's the temp of the fuel from the pump? It's supposed to be stored at 60 degrees. Hotter fuel means more foam and less fuel per gallon as the fuel expands when heated. OOIDA recently did research on heated fuel and dealer gouging and how to report it.
Those little screens in your faucet that aerate the water you drink and supposedly make it more palatable. The same screens are often used in the fuel nozzle/hose. They claim it is for filtration but it aerates the fuel. The fuel should have been filtered before it went into the tanker then again going into the ground tank then again at the pump? All this filtering and we still get bad batches of fuel? Something isn't right Just my .02. I buy fuel at Pilot about 16mpg. I buy fuel at Fly J 18-19mpg. This will decrease in winter

2006 3500 Quad CAb,2wd,6 speed LWB. Totally stock,16-20 mpg depending on the fuel.

H BROWN, I hate to disappoint you, but I just hand calculated my 2nd tank of fuel. 549 miles to 940 miles = 391 miles, 23.75 gallons of fuel = 16.46 mpg.
Overhead read anywhere between 18.7 crusing at 65 to 70 mph. to as low as 16.1 creeping along for 1/2 hour idling trying to get out of sporting event parking lot. I know it will get 20 mpg on the highway once it loosens up a little. I'm sorry yours won't do any better than 13 mpg.

Check to see about loose boost tubes or a crack in the intercooler. If you don't have gauges, GET SOME! Something is wrong with your truck to get such poor mileage. I have an 2005 4x4 with 35's and I get atleast 17 on the hwy. at 80 mph.

I get 20.2 highway only at 68 to 70 but only around 14 in town. I got 38,xxx and have never towed a thing yet. Mine started out lousy too even went to dealer and complained twice, then they came out with the new reflash and had the reflash and went to max air in the tires. I wish in town was better but not yet. Also I made same trip, LA to vegas with and witout shell and was suprised that the mpg's were the same. My cal were hand ck filled to the brim each time.

I have 890 miles on mine and I have been averaging 16.5mpg hand calculated. When I test drove a couple different trucks I saw that there was a difference in two of them that were the exact same truck besides color and tire. The better MPG truck was running the Michelins, the worse the BFG's. The better was averaging 18.5-21mpg running at 68mph on the highway and the worse was averaging 16.0-16.5 at the samw highway speeds, same stretch of road, same day, within 30 minutes of each other, no wind, same temps reading on the overhead. I then drove a Mega Cab and there was a significant loss in fuel mileage at the same speeds and I could tell that the truck was working a little harder moving the MC at these speeds. I say- - - get the flash, give her some time to break in, and just enjoy driving the coolest, strongest, longest lasting truck made.

spreadsheet says:

I've been keeping count on a spreadsheet for every tankful. Keep them separated for empty and towing.

Here's my results:

Empty best (handcalc) = 19.6
Empty worst (handcalc) = 14.7
OBC average (202gal) = 17.42
Handcalc average = 17.18

The best part:

Towing best (handcalc) = 17.8
Towing worst (handcalc) = 10.9
OBC average (237gal) = 16.37
Handcalc average = 16.2

I've noticed that whenever I get a really good handcalc, the next tank is about as much lower than average. I think this is because of fill differences. My towing is not a big load - about 6k, but the mileage hooked up is still better than I thought it would be. Love that NV5600.

Towed with my partner's SB 04.5 auto once...whole different ballgame.

....another factor in this is how much fuel is going into the tank. It's pretty well known that if you stand there and fiddle with the pump you can often get 3-5 more gallons of fuel in. I recently had a customer that constantly complained of 13.5 mpg. I ended up filling it myself until I could see fuel in the filler neck, drove the truck conservatively still maintaining the speed limit. After 70 miles I ended up at the same station and filled it the same way as I did when I started. Found with his speedo being off for every 26 miles on the odometer, he was going 27 miles on my GPS. Odo mpg ended up at 18.5, GPS mpg was at 19.2. Overhead was at 17.9.
