Breaking In

I have always heard you don't want to get a new vehicle on the interstate and run at a constant speed for several miles. I have just over 400 miles on mine now (City Driving) and have an 1 1/2 trip to make this weekend. Do you think it will be OK or ready for the constant speed???????

According to the manual, don't use the cruise for 1k; <50mph for the first 500. LET IT RIP! Just stay off the cruise until 1k.

It is my understanding it is better if you vary the speeds, not keep it at the same speed for any length of time.

Id put a few miles on her for the rear differential gears to wear in with each other............then hook up to the heaviest trailer you can and find the steepest hill and go for it. The Cummins needs to get the temps up and work to help set the piston rings. Your engine will thank you for it. The worst thing you can do is PAMPER it. Work it!

That's my understanding too... break in under load. Just turned 800 light miles on '06 2500 CTD and hooked 8000# travel trailer today. Wife thought I was nuts. Told her Cummins needs to break in under load here on out. Yee Haa!

Its better to seat them rings with the load that way there is no chance of a premature ridge forming on ya, that can later be smacked if you tow later on.

The only thing you have to worry about when doing that is the differential gears. You're supposed to let them seat up good before you pull, but I don't know how much it herts to pull early.
