I'm noticing that all the guys with ball joint problems seem to have 4x4 trucks. Anyone with a 4x2 have these ball joint problems? I'm wondering if the two units are different and therefore my 4x2 ball joints may (hopefully) not die as quickly. Would like to get more than 20-25k miles out of them!

Would a bad ball joint cause death wobble?

Yes, very possible. The Death Wobble many talk about is actually known in the repair industry as a Caster shimmy.
The Shimmy starts from incorrect caster but is amplified by loose parts such as ball joints.

NONE. There are a few aftermarket units, but none of the big guys(Moog,TRW) are making any yet. I went to the dealer the other day...they checked mine and they are in "spec". The spec calls for as much as 20 thousands play! They ordered me new ones anyway. However they did tell me the new ones might be just as loose. I am having NO ill effects on the steering or handling at all. I simply noticed they were loose when I rotated my tires.

20 thousands of play would dissappear if greased.

at the dealership right now.... They called me it's not ready yet
they told me they had to pull the axles to install the ball joints.
Pull the axles? That seams alittle harsh. Need to drop off the diff lube that I use tonight.

WOw...that's amazing those are wearing so fast. I just replaced the outer tie rods and lower ball joints on my dad's T-Type '86 Buick Riviera T-Type. It has 450K on the ticker and this is the first time they were replaced. They actually were in pretty good shape, except for the rubber. And it is not because he is an easy on the car driver, just the opposite...licence revoked many times for speeding. No one will ride with him!
