bad feul mileage
my dad has a 05 ctd 6speed with 4.10 rear gear and he when on atrip to texas and got 8 to 10 mpg towing a 26 foot 5th wheel camper that weights about 8500 lbs. the truck has about 40,000 miles on it when he is not towing he gets 19 to 20 mpg does that sound right to any one? his old truck 97 ctd got 16 to 18 mpg towing the same camper. both trucks were 2wd with 4.10's the old one had a automatic the new one is a 6 speed.

I'd say thats pretty close to right for these newest ones. My '03 CTD got 22 on the road and 16 pulling the same weight travel trailer. This '06 with 3.73's on a good day will do 16 on the highway and I got 9.8 hand calculated last weekend with the trailer.

16 to 18 pulling a 8500 camper sounds real high. How fast does he pull with the new truck? My 03 gets hands down better milage pulling then my 93 did.I get around 12 to 13 pulling 9k or so but NEVER any faster then 65/68 mph.

Have not got a real good reading yet on my CTD hauling for MPG, but I do know the 4.10's are going to kill ya on the high way. My Powertroke with 4.10's, anything over 65 MPH loaded or un loaded just killed it. My CTD with 3.73's and the 6 speed I can cruise at 70 MPH and still get what I would condsider REAL good fuel economy for such a large truck, @ 18-19MPG unloaded. The only time I took a trip loaded was buddies race car @ 2700LBS, trailer @ 2000 LBS, tools, toolbox etc,, so @ 5700LBS and 4 people inthe truck. Cruising @ 70-75 MPH got 14 MPG. I would think 8-10 that your Dad is getting seems a little low. Just watch those RPMs with those 4.10's AND the 6 speed. RPM kills a diesel's fuel economy.

The 4.10 puts the truck in the sweet spot at 65/68 mph.My neighbor with 3.73s (and AUTO)is not real happy with his towing weight. The sweet spot is 70 plus, for him to fast.then on up and down switch backs it lugs at 65/68 and has to down shift.Says my truck tows much better. Now NOT TOWING his is great.

Are you calling the man a liar? Me, I believe everthing anyone posts here.
My '04 gets a steady 15 mpg pulling a 24 foot enclosed trailer. Total trailer weight is over 10K. I drive 60 to 65 to get this mileage. If driving 55 would get me better mpg, I'd drive it with diesel at $2.739 per. See my sig for my truck specs.

Best solo, 19.3 mpg, so far - and maybe that is the best it will get to, mileage now about 16500.
Pulling a loaded fifth wheel, gross about 9,500 the best we got was 14.3, worst 9.4, all hand calculated. I don't like the ratios on the truck, I have enough power to use a much taller gear, so I will keep looking...
