The primary reason for my post was to help prevent some poor soul with his brand spanking new Cummins from reading these posts, running out to do some offroading and ending up in a real pickle. Someone new to running diesels might read these posts and think they had just purchased the best off-roading truck in the world only to be surprised by how easy it is to get these stuck in the soft stuff if you're not careful - that goes for the any of them (CTD, Duramax, Powerstroke). They're fantastic rigs - the Cummins that is - but they have their limits...they're fer pullin and a little offroadin

Mine gets used off road but not for playing on the trails. I have a Toyota for that. I use mine in new neighbor hood constrction. This time of year it gets really muddy. Luck me there are dosers and othe large equipment to open the areas for me when I have to get to them. Still have to drive through slop but the big stuff that will dent and scratch the truck get moved well befor I am in there. I have not been stuck yet I am actually very suprised about this. The truck has performed very well so far. It would not be my first choice for the soft stuff (my toyota is ) but it works.

I had mine for 3 months when I took it into a little damp ground.
Sunk like a rock.
Had gone through the same trail exactly a year prior in my Tacoma and it didn't even blink.

Combination of stock tires and 4,000#'s of front end weight doesn't work in mud.
Tacoma was stock except for BFG AT's
Had to hike 2-3 miles back to the main road and have a Ford F-150 come yank on me a couple times to get me back to solid earth.

I've since done a few modifications and will give that same trail another try this June.
Should have my winch by then as well, just in case.

I've taken my $32,000 truck (plus $8,000 in mods) on a few trails that were just wide enough for a Jeep to slip between the trees and I have the scratches to prove it.
And have had one or more tire completely off the ground as well, just not more than one at a time.

I did wait a year before attempting those roads though, figure in depreciation, probably a $22,000 truck now

As it is my primary mode of transportation, I don't go crazy out there in the wilds.
And I always stay on established trails, no creating new roads for me.

I checked and the front axle weight on my off-roader (83 W350) is 4150#. I belive the typical front axle weight on the Cummins is in the 4500-4600 area from what I have been seing. I don't have an empty weight on my 03.

I've used mine 4 times off road in some pretty sticky stuff (Texas Gumbo) and in rice fields for hunting. It's been fine so far. I have 35x12.5 MT's so I think that helps a lot. When I get into the mud I can feel the front-end sinking down, but I give it some more power and it crawls right out. I'd take it on moderate to hard trails, but nothing that involved rock crawling. It's just too much truck for that. Have fun with your truck and post some picks when you get the tires on. I'm sure it will look bad***.

Well I guess I have had mine off-road once, or atleast it was stuck. Oh yea it weighed 30,000# at the time, LOL.

Pulled into a field and truck trailer and all sunk down, unloaded the trucks from the trailer and I was able to pull the trailer out empty though.

This was the load: I should have taken a picture stuck but never thought of it, oh well, next time

My '93 cummins is worthless in 2wd with nothin in the back, but when you lock in the hubs with that locker in the front ya better hang on in the snow at least. I have only had it for 2 months so not much experiance in the mud YET. When I do I will let ya know.

I go off-road every chance I get (which isn't often, around here), but never on anything particularly difficult. I'd like to just be able to go the places Earthroamer goes... www.earthroamer.com
