Am I being unrealistic?

I have been trying to find a used 03' or early 04' for about 23k. I have found plenty, but they all have at least 100k mi. on them. How dumb would it be to buy a truck with that many miles? I plan on keeping it until it won't run, and then rebuild it. I don't plan on buying another truck so I am being picky. What did you guys pay for your used CTD's?

EDIT: I should have said that I could't find one that wasn't 1500 miles away too.

It would probably be best to wait and find one thats already been broke in.

I just bought my 04 with 30,400 and extended warranty for 26k. Its not a great deal but the truck is in excellent condition and i have been looking for about 5 months and is the best deal that I have run into.

There will always be the guys that say they bought theirs for way less and whose to say they didd'nt, but I havent been able to find one of the great deals.

Well, I got one of those rare great deals almost 2years ago. I only paid $18,500 for mine back in Aug. '04 it did have high miles for the age(89,000), but the previous owner kept meticulous service records. He only used it for commuting between PHX and L.A. for his insurance adjusting buisness, so I didn't care too much. Heck, I still could darn near sell it today for what I paid for it then.

I wanted a an 03-04 used when I was looking. I was not ready to commit to payments on a new one. I looked everywhere within 3-4 hours of home. I wanted no more than 50 thousand miles. This was back in Aug of 05 by the way. I could not find anything less than 29000 unless they were in the 100 thousand mile range. I walked away from many trucks with 40 thousand miles in the 03-04 years after leaving an offer of 23-24 thousand as take it or leave it. My phone never rang, this lasted until October and I was in a dealership looking at one and the guys said I cant do that price but I can get you into an 06 for this. I finaly said forget it and bought the new one. i understand your frustration cause i looked forever, and I sure hope these values hold up when i go to sell mine.

The cummins engine has been used in one form or another for many years. Most of the early ones found their way into many different commercial applications, and the 24 valve one is used by much larger, heavier vehicles than the light weight pickup market. No commercial enterprise would use such an engine, if it did not think that mileage in excess of 300,000 miles was possible without major work. There are MANY 3500 pickup travelling around the country, delivering RVs to dealerships, with upwards of 300 k on perfect sounding, and economically running engines. Buying such a vehicle, with only 100k on is not a foolish thing to do, but rather a wise move, as is gives you reliability, without the same payment I have. I bought new because of the truck I needed rid of. It is hard to trade a year old truck, for an older one.

Hi, PanteraGSTK,

I paid $19kfor the 03 in my sig back in November. It's a very late build 03, and it had 40k on it when I bought it. It was sold 30 miles away brand new, and it's about 95% the way I would have ordered it myself.

My 2004 is still new

In March of '04 I traded my 2 year old 2002 3/4T with 7800 miles on it for the 1T 2204 I have now. After two years I have just turned over 11,000 miles. I may have to trade it soon. The ash trays are really getting dirty.

Thanks for all the replies, I fell a little better now. I think I may get one with a few more miles, though here in Texas they are usually worked hard or ragged out by some rich kid. I just want a truck with a competent owner so I know I won't be buying someone else's problem. I wanted to buy new, but there is no way I can afford the payment.(well I can, I just wanna have money to buy tires, wheels and other fun stuff ) Plus I'd rather not buy a new body style the first year. And I don't want a cat.
