Angry Alpine HU and Sirius tuners

I have a Alpine head unit 9833, I have also just went thru my second Sir Alp 1 satellite tuner,
The first two just quit working, they locked up my head unit. Does anyone else have this problem. Of Course one blames the other so no real help is out there,

If i have to go to a plug and play type what is the best and where to locate it, I had planned to use the head unit to do all the displaying, doing with out satellite is really tuff once you have it.

I have the Alpine head with the built-in XM tuner. That may be the way to go, probably the cheapest. Do they have any of those for Sirius? FM modulation just defeats the purpose of having satellite radio, IMHO. Plus, I haven't heard much about plug and play for Sirius.

that's the one that just came out, right? made by terk? i was planning on a similar setup with the 9835. maybe i'll hold off. the problem is likely in the tuner, alpine headunits have been around a while and are not known for having problems.

the 9820XM is a nice unit but lacks MP3 playback and the v-drive amplifier, it's more of a mid-level whereas the 9833 and 35 are top of the line. they don't offer anything with integrated sirius. it would be nice if they'd integrate sirius and/or XM tuners into their higher end units.

There is no terk unit used only a Sirius Alpine tuner called Alp 1,

This unit is made by Direct Electronics for Sirius.

I am awaiting my third unit, If it fails too then I will find another way and not use the head unit, Its a shame cause that is why i spent the money on a good HU.

I agree, but I don't need an MP3 player right now as I guess I just haven't moved up with music technology all that much. I love the integrated XM tuner as it saved me about $150. But I have had a reoccurring problem with the Alpine losing its memory and all of my station and tone settings.

I agree that fm modulation defeats the whole purpose of having a digital source. Then again, mp3 is also a very lossy format and I avoid it as well - they sound like crap to a trained ear. Looks like you'll have to go to XM radio if you want alpine. I think a few other brands do offer plug/play sirius - maybe pioneer, not sure. Get yourself a crutchfield catalog for reference, and then order somewhere that isn't a rip off

I got my Alpine head and speakers from Crutchfield and I thought it was a good deal. They include a lot of accessories like wiring harness and antenna adaptors for free.

gotcha. i just ordered a 9835 but held off on the alp 1 tuner because i don't trust anything that just came out, especially after reading this. thought i do wonder if the problem has something to do with your headunit? where did you buy it? if the third one fails either the alp 1 is junk or there is something wrong with your headunit. i just had a similar problem with a panasonic headunit and tuner. turns out the headunit was bad and the tuner was fine.

Update: I have removed the alpine head unit and the Sirius tuner, installed a Clarion Head unit and Clarion Sirius Tuner, Diffrence between day and night, I believe that Alpine is not yet perfected the Satellite tuner yet and this is/was the problem.

I also have the Alpine 9833 great deck. Never had any problems with it.
I lucked out and bought the Alpine XM satelite reciiever about 3 years ago. (they don't make them anymore). But like everyone else is saying do direct XM reciever to head connection not the FM modulator. The diffenence is the digital signal has more dynamic DB seperation (musical ambiance)

Slice Why Sirrus?

I have listened to both and based on what music I like sirius was the best choice for me. The money is not an issue but I do like Hair-nation, buzz saw on sirius,
