Aftermarket Double-DIN Stereo, REC Navigation bezel and trim
I've been researching the best way to put an aftermarket double-DIN radio in place of my stock 1.5 DIN radio. Most people suggest getting a double-DIN bezel from a Laramie with navigation, but I found a pic on another forum and it looked like there was a lot of black space between the aftermarket radio and the wood grain bezel. Is this the case with that setup?
Also, I could have sworn I saw another pic on here where someone used a double-DIN stereo and there was no black space between the radio and bezel...but I can't find it now. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Any pics of either setup would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what it actually stands for, but it's basically a unit of measurement for the size of a stereo chassis. You know how some stock stereos are "normal" size and others are twice as big? The smaller one would be a 1 DIN and one that's twice a big would be a 2 DIN.

Good question,
From the crutchfield site:
Q: My car has an oversized factory radio. Why can't I replace it with an oversized aftermarket receiver?
A: "Oversized" receivers come in two different sizes:
the 3" tall (or DIN-and-a-half) slot found in many GM/Chrysler vehicles
the 4" tall (or Double-DIN) opening in some Japanese vehicles.
If the dimensions of your car's dash opening differ by even a fraction of an inch from these standard oversized openings, you won't be able to install one of these oversized aftermarket radios without modifying your dash.
Many Fords, for instance, appear to have Double-DIN openings — in reality, the opening is a little too small. In some vehicles, the bracket system that holds the factory radio in place won't work with an oversized aftermarket receiver. In either case, we recommend installing a standard DIN-sized radio with a mounting kit.

Someone here must know of the pic I'm referring to.
For those who have an aftermarket double-DIN stereo, is there a black space where the installation kit fills in the gaps? Isn't the stock Laramie Nav bezel actually larger than a double-DIN?

Din
DIN stands for "Deutsches Institut für Normung" it is an organization that publishes standards. Very similar to ANSI "American National Standards Institute" or CSA "Canadian Standards Association" in Canada. A DIN radio conforms to the dimensional (and other) characteristics set out in a DIN (German) standard. If I am not mistaken the actual standard for radio size is DIN 7736. There are many things refered to generically as DIN, for example the old (pre-USB) keyboard plugs followed a DIN standard and was sometimes referred to as a "DIN connector". Just some useless info for ya.

according to crutchfield the double din will fit if you have the factory nav bezel.
Here is the mounting kit from crutchfield. Looks like it has a setup for single din with a slot beneath it or the small looking frame to the left for double din.

I just installed a double din Kenwood Navigtion/DVD head unit in my truck this weekend. I bought the factory navigation bezel and a metra install kit. There is about 1/2" - 3/4" trim around the double din radio and the factory bezel. That is what the metra install kit is for. The factory REC Navigation receiver is actually larger then a standard double din radio. I will try and take a picture tonight to help you out some more with a visual.
On another note if you have the infinity speaker system you are going to need a special adapter to hook up the radio and you loose your fader and balance. Plus if you have the steering wheel controls you will need 2 more adapters. By the time it is all done you are gonna spend around $200 on adapters plus the factory navigation bezel for a Larime is around $65 and the SLT is around $95.
Hope I helped a little.

I found them at the dealership. The last time my truck was in for service, I asked about the double-sized DIN bezel at the counter. The counter person gave me a part number (can't find it now) - the price was roughly $65.

I've got a double din unit in mine. Just trimmed the original dash piece to fit, filled the stupid half circles with a piece of black plastic from an installation kit, and it looks pretty decent. I thought about getting the Nav dash piece, but I HATE the woodgrain and plan to eventually do something with it/to it anyhow so figured I'd wait until I figure out exactly what I am going to do.

Thats pretty **** cheap. I can believe somthing like that from the dealer would cost so little. I would have imagined somthing like $250 sound a little more right lol
