That's a good way to do it. I shut oiff the heater core during the summer using a 3-way valve:

Otherwise it flows out both back head ports to both the filter and heater:

I just had my engine rebuilt, so I had my heater core shut-off valve setup removed, since I had elected not to use it after I installed it. Those two heater hoses are VERY expensive, so make sure you really want this before you cut them to install the valves.

Thursday to Saturday this week were 111 degrees. Supposed to be in the 110-112 degree range most of this week. Our hottest so far was back in June, 118 degrees. I admit that there is a difference in the higher humidity where you are, but anything over 110 is friggin miserable to walk out into.
My AC (without this mod done) keeps the truck cool enough to be mostly comfortable, but not cold like other vehicles I have owned in the past. It is probably time to get my AC charged again as it hasn't been done in about 4 years.

Why do you have to cut the heater hoses? I just did this to mine (i do it very summer) and they are still like they come from the factory.
