8500 mile trip fuel mileage results
Just completed a 8500 mile trip. We left San Angelo, TX and traveled through the Carolina's and Virginia. Up to northern Michigan, across to Yellowstone then finally all the way up to Fairbanks, AK. As this was a PCS move for the Army, I weighed the truck empty and then again after loading. I was carrying 1840 lbs between the bed and a hitch platform. The worst milage I got was 15.53 running 75 with the air on and heading dead into a 20 mph wind in North Dakota. The best I got on US interstates was 19.03 from Virginia beach through Pennsylvania and into Ohio. While on the Alaska highway where the speed limit is 62.2 (100 kph) the worst I got was 17.12 and the best was 21.05. All figures were hand calculated. This is in a Cummins 600 with a Feb. 10 build date and no reflashes. Total average fuel for trip was 17.728. The only fuel efficiency mods I've made are an Air Aid and the MIT intake tube. I also have a cap on the bed.

I am curious as to what your fill up technique is to calculate fuel mileage. For THE MOST accurate, I fill till I see fuel in the filler neck, then run it down and refill to the neck again. You will be suprised how much your overhead read out is off, if you have one and how far off it will be filling up in this way. You will probably see a number change even the way you are hand calculating now. Give it a try.
