5.5 gallon gas tank mod?

When recently shopping for a new truck I noticed some appeared to have an added option that increased gas tank size from the stock 34 gallons.

I've done a quick search but I don't think I am using the right keywords to see if this has been discussed. Is this ringing any bells that someone could elaborate or point me to a thread with some details like: what it is, is it factory installed only, is it in the after market?

its done in your garage, basicly the factory puts a safety bubble in the tank ~5 gallon area. What the mod does is move your filling hose to this safety bubble allowing you to put an extra 5 gallons or so in and fill all the way up to the filler neck. Do a search for 'tank vent mod' or 'fuel tank vent'. you can buy a kit or go to lowes any buy everything you need there if you do a little research. Its not hard at all, i did mine in about 2 hours with very little knowhow.

The factory fuel tank was designed for gas, so the vent is not on top; there is an “air cushion” built in for fuel expansion into the hump at the back of the tank. All you have to do is move the vent top the top of the tank where the hump is. There are some kits available or you can do it your self. Glacier Diesel has a nice kit, but I just went to http://www.fittings4less.com/ and built my own kit. Not only can you add more fuel but it fills faster with less foam with this mod.

While you are at it put some filters on the rollover vents so you don't get dirt pulled into the tank.

Certainly seems straight forward enough and looking at glacier's page it appears I already have everything I think I need out in the garage. Now I just need a little warm weather

Yes, I agree. It is cool driving almost 100 highway miles before the fuel gauge moves off "full". Plus not "fighting the foam" is worth it.

I believe the fuel tanks in the 6.7L address that issue. My Dad can fill his to the brim very easily. But I don't know if they change the style of the tank and if more fuel can be pumped in.

That would throw a wrench into the process. I guess that's makes the question full circle then...on new truck window stickers there is an option that says 5.5 extra diesel capacity. Mine did not come with that option, so what is that option? Is it simply this tank mod that has been explained?

you can get all the parts from the part store for about $20 instead of the $50-60 for the kit. here is the tread on the CF about doing it.

No. What that means is the truck is filled with 5.5 gallons of fuel from the factory.

no way...really? that is a rip off, you should be getting a full fuel tank when the truck is purchased. what would 5.5gals from the factory accomplish?

What that accomplishes is the manufacturer doesn't have to buy fuel anymore. This isn't just a Dodge diesel thing. You buy a new car and you pay for the gas the factory puts in it. Of course that means they are burning your fuel when test driving, loading/unloading, etc.

It didn't end up being worth the cost of the kit for me.
For whatever reason I received no added fuel storage. I'm not exactly sure how it happened. I fill the tank till fuel is coming out the side tube which is now on top of that air bubble in the tank. Yet I'm not pumping any more fuel than I used too. Still right around 32 gallons.

My tank now will hold 40 gallons after the vent mod. 220 miles before the needle moves. Very easy to do. Make sure every thing is diesel rated if you do it yourself.

Maybe there are 2 different tanks?
My Mega sticker says 34 gallon tank, but the sticker on 3500 long beds says 35 gallon tank?
