My actual insurance only went up $4.35 a month from my 03 QC 1500. And this truck is 20K more than that one so I don't think that was bad.
My only concern is driving to Home Depot and turning down a road that says no commercial vehicles. I'm going to call the DMV when they open and see what they say.

Enjoy your new truck....

Odds are half the cops wont even know better and the other half don't care, because if what they told you at the dmv is correct, then I am in violation and I have been followed around by Tempe, Chandler and Mesa cops and they haven't pulled me over yet.

Here in N.Y. if the truck is over a certain GVW you need commercial plates. This translates into all 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
The minimum used to be 5500 and they just recently raised it because some of the 1/2 tons were requiring commercial plates! I'm not sure what the new weights are but it's definately below any heavy duty trucks.
* I live on L.I. and not am I not allowed to go on any parkways. I'm not allowed in the left on certain highways and when I pay a toll it's usually double the regular rate.
Total B.S.

When the dealership registered the 03 for me they set the GVW at 300lb over the empty weight. I thought it was funny but the best thing was I paid a lot less taxes. I did not ask them to register it that way but I didn't complain...

I never even thought about any of this before purchasing it. I would have been really mad if the situation would have been different.
Thanks for all the info. This is helpful.

Different all over!! Basicaly it's a racket with each state!! REVENUE is the main cause. You get me MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!!! Here in Ga the same you have 2500 no problem, you get 3500 you pay for commerical insurance and so forth.
That's why I've stayed away from 3500 class. Just and individual shouldn't have to register and pay commerical when you're not using it as such. My 2500 pulls as much as the 3500 just not the advantage of dual wheels. Here even single wheel 3500 is commerical. I did my homework before buying, heard too many conflicting stories. Sorry and good luck!

vechicle under 14.2K gvw is considered a passenger vechicle and I don't have commercial insurance. I have geico and they don't sell commercial insurance.

I don't know how other states are, but here in PA you tell the clerk what weight you want the truck registered for. My truck is registered for 8,600 lbs (saves me $45 a year) even though the GVW is 10,100 lbs. There is nothing illegal about this as long as I do not carry a heavy enough load to put me over 8,600 lbs.

I was not issued any special plate, but a NM DOT officer ,told me just yesterday, that all diesels are considered "big rigs" (In NM) and that we are required to carry all the appropriate equipment. Including a fuel book or fuel receipts. I bought some emergency triangles from Wal Mart today. A First Aid kit and Fire ext. are also required. Out of curiosity I checked my reg., as my brother-in-law had done it for me. $90.00 Truck. Nothing about commercial.

In Montana, I played stupied at the courthouse and told them uh...I never tow anything. Okay then, out the door with regular registration. I do the same on my trailers. Permanant plates on my car hauler that I only use for 500 pound loads. Never have to buy plates for it again!

From the FMCSR green book, section 382.107
A commercial vehicle is defined as:
(this is a summary, not actual code)
A vehicle or combination of vehicles used to transport passengers or property for commercial purposes IF:
GCVWR is over 26k AND power unit is over 10k GVW
or
GVW is over 26k
or
carries 16 or more passengers
or
transports a placardable amount of hazmat
So unless you're hauling a trailer (other than a TT) with a GVW over 15k with that dually, you are NOT a commercial vehicle. If you have to deal with this doofus on a regular basis, get a FMCSR green book and study it a little - then you can "chapter and verse" him until he shuts up.
The whole "commercial purposes" thing is very broad, though. If you haul your own race car, or haul your horses to a show - if you can win money you ARE commercial and you had better be legal if you are pulled into a weigh station.
