3500 Registration Question????
I got the paper work from the dealer in Las Vegas fed ex to me today and took the truck down to the DMV in Arizona to register and they told me because it was a 1 ton I needed commercial plates and it would be $11.00 more. I don't care about the 11 bucks, I'm just wondering if this is the same in other states and what does it mean?
I know I've seen signs that say no commercial vehicles and am wondering if this now pertains to me?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I had to pay more for the tags and a whole lot more tax because of the GVW of the truck. Funny thing is that my last truck was a 3500 too and the dealership guy registered it with a much lower GVW and I just got regular tags for it.
You aren't considered a commercial vehicle unless you put commercial markings on the truck...

Different all over!! Basicaly it's a racket with each state!! REVENUE is the main cause. You get me MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!!! Here in Ga the same you have 2500 no problem, you get 3500 you pay for commerical insurance and so forth.
That's why I've stayed away from 3500 class. Just and individual shouldn't have to register and pay commerical when you're not using it as such. My 2500 pulls as much as the 3500 just not the advantage of dual wheels. Here even single wheel 3500 is commerical. I did my homework before buying, heard too many conflicting stories. Sorry and good luck!

My actual insurance only went up $4.35 a month from my 03 QC 1500. And this truck is 20K more than that one so I don't think that was bad.
My only concern is driving to Home Depot and turning down a road that says no commercial vehicles. I'm going to call the DMV when they open and see what they say.

My dually has normal plates, but my last one (95 Chevy 3500 dually) had cc plates, both bought from dealers (not the same one) so I think it has to do with where you go and who does the paperwork. Maybe try one of those title/reg/plate places instead of the dmv.

I called the DMV and they said the only reason is because of the size. I got a supervisor on the phone and made a comment that "a lot of my friends have 3500's" and they didn't have a commercial plate.
He stated that the DMV rep must have missed it for my friends. He stated that if you have a 1 ton they should charge you the fee and give you a commercial plate but that because it's for personal use I will have no problems with the police.
He said if you have signs on the side of the truck and the bed is loaded with 5 gallon paint buckets than I might have a problem.
I called my wife and told her we couldn't paint the bedrooms because of this.
